Happy First Line Friday! Technically it is still Thursday because, well, it is. It is 8:20 PM on Thursday night as I am typing this and by tomorrow I will be exhausted because let me tell you a major truth: there is NO tired like first week of school tired. AND next week will be the worst of it, because the first three days of this week were meetings and working on our classrooms. Students started today. Next though...I'll be lucky if I can keep my eyes open by Wednesday. I hope I can though, because next week my church is starting our new small groups for the fall and I AM SO EXCITED because we are reading this book, which my first line comes from this week:
"In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth."
I first attempted to read the Bible cover to cover in seventh grade. I made it through Deuteronomy before I gave up. I know the New Testament much better than the Old Testament and I am looking forward to this one, plus I get to be in a small group lead by my pastors, who are pretty much two of my most favorite people on the planet.
Let me know what you think of the line, and/or leave a line of your own. Then, visit my fellow First-Liners to see what they have this week. We have several new members who have joined in the recent weeks, make sure you check them out!

Sounds great! Hope the first week has gone smoothly for you.
ReplyDeleteI've got the first line from "Chasing Secrets" by Lynette Eason on the blog today, but I've just finished reading "A Rose So Fair" by Myra Johnson, so I'm going to share the first line from that here:
"Now just you hold it right there, mister." Rose Linwood sighted her unwelcome visitor down the length of Grandpa's trusty Winchester.
She's a spunky one!
It has been surprisingly calm for the most part - not perfect, but nothing we can't handle. Next week will be the real test! Happy Friday!
DeletePraying for you as you get back into the school routine again. I've heard great things about this book. Can't wait to see what you think of it.
ReplyDeleteI'm featuring "Healing Love" by Jennifer Slattery on my blog today, but I'm currently reading "A Name Unknown" by Roseanna M. White.
London
May 1914
Rosemary Gresham may have been a thief, but she was a thief who preferred to work in broad daylight.
Thank you so much Rebecca, that is very kind of you. I am trying reeeeally hard to not read too far into the book yet but it is tough and I am looking forward to getting into it. Thanks for coming by!
DeleteHappy Friday! My first line is from An Alaskan Christmas by Belle Calhoune: “Finn O’Rourke paced back and forth in terminal 27A of the Anchorage airport.”
ReplyDeleteHappy Friday, now Saturday, to you also Becky. Thank you for stopping by and sharing your line with me!
DeleteKinda hard to top that one!
ReplyDeleteRight??!! I contemplated using the first line of the introduction, but I could not resist one of the most awesome sentences in the history of the written word <3
DeleteSELAH! Happy Friday!
ReplyDeleteSince I'll be finishing Pepper Basham's The Thorn Healer before lunch, I'm sharing the first line from my current Chapter 22: "I hate leaving you like this." Catherine stilled her movements from packing her trunk, her coral walking suit an elegant fit on her delicate frame. "Not when David and Alexander could help tend the sickness."
Happy Friday to you also Caryl, thank you for coming by. So many of the other First Liners have read The Thorn Healer, I may end up adding it to my TBR list. Thank you for sharing your line with me this week!
DeleteWell of course I love this first line! :) I was just thinking the other day...I have read so many books, but I have not read the most important book from cover to cover. I think I will go back and read some of the latter Old Testament books...you will enjoy studying those! :)
ReplyDeleteOh yes, I will!! :) I had an amazing English and Reading teacher in sixth grade, the first person outside my family who encouraged me to write. He told me I was a writer and whenever I feel like what I'm writing is not good enough, I remember his words (and it helps we have reconnected on Facebook!) He always said there was not a book written that could stop me after coming into 6th grade having already read the likes of Romeo and Juliet and To Kill a Mockingbird. The Bible is the one that slowed me down and Deut. eventually stopped me all together, so I am definitely looking forward to this book and my group at church. Let's pick an Old Testament book sometime and read it "together"!
DeleteThat is the BEST first line ever! Have a wonderful weekend!
ReplyDeleteIsn't it though?! I debated between that and the first line of the introduction, but in the end it really was a no-brainer. I had to go with one of the most awesome lines in the history of the written word.
DeleteI love the cover!
ReplyDeleteMy first line is:
“23 July 1955
There was going to be a funeral.” ~ Magpie Murders by Anthony Horowitz
Happy Reading!
Dinh@Arlene's Book Club
Me too, it is so simple ad beautiful. Thank you for coming by, have a wonderful book-filled weekend!
DeleteI hope the small group study blesses you. I've never been able to successfully find a small group to study with.
ReplyDeleteMy first line comes from Hold the Light by April McGowan.
"Unremarkable. Amber glanced out the steaming windowpane at the cityscape below her."
One of the (many) things my church does well is groups like this. I know, that sounds braggy and I'm sorry if it comes across that way. I have just been so blessed to be welcomed into the congregation so quickly and to find a place, it has been wonderful for the last three and a half years. Feel free to get the book and we can have our own small group :)
DeleteLooks like a great read!
ReplyDeleteOh yes, it is! Try as I might, I can't stop reading even though group doesn't start until Wednesday. At least my pastors expect this from me, they know I kind of have a thing for books ;)
