NetGalley ARC | Who Haunts You

I received a free digital ARC from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Rating | ⭐⭐⭐

Bex is a neurodivergent senior in high school, trying her best to navigate her world and graduate. When her classmates start dying, Bex is certain the deaths are all connected. As she investigates, she finds that each victim believed they were being haunted by long-dead relatives - ones that their families swear never existed. When Bex is visisted by her own possible ghost, she knows she must solve the mystery or she will be next to die.

Seeing Bex navigate this experience as someone on the autism spectrum was really interesting. I have worked with many students with autism and appreciate a realistic portrayal. I also appreciated the fact that the author acknowledges there is truly a spectrum, and varying degrees of autism. Accurate portrayals are so important - all kids need to see themselves reflected in what they read and watch, so I am glad that Bex was a fully fleshed-out, developed character.

The story is not long, coming it at under 200 pages. For the most part it was fairly fast-paced as Bex works quickly to understand what is happening.

My main issue, and thus the reason for only three stars, is entirely because of the ending. It felt really rushed and thrown-together. Switching from a paranormal thriller to a psychological thriller was incredibly jarring. I didn't hate it, I just wasn't expecting it. Had the book been a little longer, a better ending could have been possible.

I would still recommend it, however, for all the positives related to the presentation of someone with autism.

    1. Yes!! Especially when there was plenty of room to make a more complete ending. The book was only like, 170 pages.
