First Line Friday: Buffy Edition

First Line Fridays hosted by Hoarding Books

Happy First Line Friday, hosted by Hoarding Books.

This week the line I am sharing comes from my (tied-for-first-with-FRIENDS) favorite show of all-time.

I LOVE Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Okay, not Buffy herself because truthfully, she annoyed me a lot of the time, at least in later seasons. Or, mostly season six when I was super angry at her for most of the time when she was being ridiculous and hooking up with Spike.

I love the show, the characters, the stories that Joss wrote in this amazing and terrifying and real world he created. I stumbled upon the show about halfway through season 2. I recall very clearly the first episode I ever saw was "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered", when Xander asked Amy to do a love spell on Cordelia, which of course backfired. I was hooked. I could not get enough of anything having to do with the show. This includes a time when I pretended I was sick to stay home from school so I could listen to a radio interview on KDWB with David Boreanaz, that lasted all of maybe ten minutes. Mom KNEW I was faking and let me stay home anyway. That's real love.

Anyway. I love the show and still watch it - because of course I have the series on DVD. 2017 is especially important, because this year is the 20th anniversary of the show's debut and thus, a fandom was born. I have not been able to stay away from Amazon, and now have a neat little collection of anniversary items:

31183671 34480816

My line this week, however, comes from this extra special treasure, the 20th anniversary edition Watcher's Guide. It is from the introduction titled "Life After Buffy" by Christopher Golden, who penned many books within the Buffyverse.

34228087

"It's difficult to remember with any real clarity what the pop cultural landscape was like before the arrival and the popularity of Buffy the Vampire Slayer".

Ain't that the truth.

I don't think I can ever really accurately convey what this show meant to me growing up and still means to me now as an adult. I can tell lots of stories about it and how obsessed I was/am, but that does not really do the show justice. If you have never watched the show, I implore you to give it a try. I can even give you a top ten list of the best episodes, but this one really is worthy of a series-long binge. Don't let the title fool you, and do not believe the hype about one vampire show being just like every other. Buffy is so much more than that.

Happy Reading
Sarah

  1. Hmm... Vampire's have never been my thing, I have to say. Hence I've never seen an episode of Buffy.

I'm featuring Sarah Monzon's upcoming release, 'The Esther Paradigm' on my blog this week, but here I will share the first line of Irma Joubert's 'The Crooked Path':

Lettie and Annabel had been friends for as long as they could remember.

    Have a great weekend! :-)

    1. It's not really just a show about vampires. So many of the monsters on the show represent what we refer to as the demons people fight in their daily lives. It's amazing - season 2 and 3 are the very best ones.

  2. Not into vampires and such.

    Prologue
"Sir? I think you need to hear this". - Against All Odds by Irene Hannon

    Happy weekend!

    1. The show is not really about vampires. I mean, on the surface it is, but every monster is mainly a metaphor for the real demons we face every day. It is a fantastic show and I am so thankful that it came along at the right time, when I was in high school!

Happy reading, thanks for coming by!

  3. I smile every time I see your blog name!

I shared a line from Seeking Mansfield by Kate Watson on my blog today but the first line of what I'm reading is...

Is Daddy down there? (from Christmas at Cade Ranch by Karen Rock).

    1. Good, I am glad someone else is as entertained by it as I am; I thought I was such a hoot when I came up with it, lol.

Thanks for coming by, happy Friday!

  4. Oh my goodness! I loved Buffy when I was younger. Has it really been 20 years already? I feel old now and I'm only 25. Haha.

I’m featuring Hometown Girl by Courtney Walsh on my blog, but I’m currently reading a non-fiction book called She’s Got The Wrong Guy: Why Smart Women Settle by Deepak Reju so I’ll use that today.

    Part 1:
    From Problems to Faith
When it comes to dating and marriage, what problems do you face as a single woman?

    Happy Friday!!

    1. Oh goodness, you were barely in school when it premiered, thank you for making me feel so old! Mostly kidding, I am only 34 :) It is such a great show, I still binge on it here and there.

Happy Friday, have a great weekend!

    2. Haha you aren't much older than me so you aren't old! Haha. I had no idea I was almost the same age as the show. That explains why I binged it on Hulu much later in life. I think I was in middle or high school when I finally started watching it. I still watch it sometimes too. :)

    3. It is kind of weird to think about being the same age as some of the things we really like/love. It is such a good show to keep coming back to. I was forever revising my top ten episodes of all time to the point I gave up and decided to just rank every episode in the series. Some call it an obsession, I prefer to call it an intense and undying love, haha.

  5. I love Buffy! It was a pretty big part of my teen years. LOL!

Today, I am featuring My Heart Belongs in Castle Gate, Utah by Angie Dicken, but I am currently in the middle of reading Hamlet with my AP Lit seniors. We are in Act 3, so I will share the first line from Act 3, Scene 1:

Claudius: And can you by no drift of conference get from him why he puts on this confusion, grating so harshly all his days of quiet with turbulent and dangerous lunacy?

    1. RIGHT?! SO GOOD! So, so good. It is amazing given the number of times I have watched each episode, the little things I notice as I have grown up. Same with Angel the Series. Such quality television.

I hope they are enjoying Hamlet! A couple years ago when Shakespeare's First Folio was on tour, I was able to see it here at one of my favorite museums and the page it was open to was Hamlet's soliloquy. I cried. Not even embarrassed about it either. It was so beautiful and wonderful to see those pages.

    1. Right??!! I can't quite believe it has been that long, but then the photo shoot for Entertainment Weekly came out, and all the tributes and stuff started happening and guh, I miss the show so much and I want a movie to finally confirm that Buffy and Angel finally got their happily ever after! I demand it!

Also, Friends has always been my go-to show to fall asleep to when E is at her dad's. I can have the volume up just loud enough that I hear them talking, but I've also seen the episodes so many times I know I won't stay up to watch. it's like a cozy blanket.

Happy Friday Heather, may your weekend be relaxing and book-filled :)

  8. Buffy, oh yes! She was awesome. I did like the show, did not love it, but that was because I was a huge fan of the show Charmed. Did you watched that one aswell? I adored that one. Oh, the memories. haha

    1. I was the opposite, I watched Charmed sometimes but did not love it because all the love in my whole heart was for BtVS and then Ats to some degree. I loved Angel but seeing him away from Buffy broke my poor teenage heart over and over and over.

  9. How fun! I never got into Buffy - I think it was on while I was in college? Or just after when I was teaching - no time to watch TV then lol.

My current first line is from A MOTHER IN THE MAKING by Gabrielle Meyer: "John Orton stared at Anna's portrait, his grief nothing compared to his pulsing guilt."

    1. It ran from 1997 - 2003. The first season was a mid-season replacement and I highly recommend you remedy your non-watching soon :) The first season was a little rough, as most first seasons are, but the potential is there fairly early. It's soooooo good. Not that you have any more time now than you did then though, but it's so good!!

Pulsing guilt. Never heard it described that way before. Happy Saturday!

  10. My first line is from The Color of Redemption by Lynn Cornell:

"An eerie foreboding had jolted me from my sleep this morning, vexing my spirit - the kind of vexing that made me want to cower under my covers and stay in bed."
