Stacking the Shelves 15

Stacking the Shelves is a weekly feature co-hosted by Tynga's Reviews and Reading Reality. It is a chance to showcase all the goodies you've collected throughout the week, whether they're bought on-line or in-store, an ARC or a final copy, borrowed from a friend or the library, physical or digital, etc. Never has my addiction been more obvious than when I am now keeping track of every single book I acquire.

I had to be sooooo good this week, because last week I hauled 30+ books. It was tough.

  2. Oh, but the books you did get look so, so good, though, Sarah!

    1. Hey Lexxie, thanks for coming by! I happened upon the name almost by accident. Back when I was first setting up my blog, I tried every cute/witty/funny combo I could think of and all were already taken. I literally sat at my computer and said, "UGH! All the book blog names are taken" and VOILA! My blog was born. Happy Reading! :)

  3. Bought a Douglas Preston book about riding horseback across Arizona and Utah. It's called, "talking to the ground".

    1. And hey, that cover is of Ragnar and not Bjorn.:p

    2. So is it just the author's adventures riding horseback across Arizona and Utah, or like a collection of stories?

I wouldn't be surprised if the cover was of someone else, the book was not great. But there's not a lot of solid facts about him, so the book was mainly "This was typical of childhood at that time..." or "He probably had..." Though I think they are looking to capitalize on the History Channel's show, and he vaguely also resembles the actor who plays Bjorn so...who knows what they were going for.

    3. Preston's previous book in this style combined travelouge, history, and interviews with people he met which included environmental and political commentary. So, readers were treated not only to the dramatic and nearly suicidal attempt to across the badlands of Arizona during the summer, but of Spanish and Hopi/Zuni history. I'm thinking this will be similar, but with a focus on the Navajo.

The guy on the cover is Travis Fimmel, who plays Ragnar. His son Bjorn is played by Alexander Ludwig:

The Vikings show has fantastic cineogtaophy, but there's lots of violence and sex. I don't mean violence just in battles -- there are torture scenes. I like the exploration of Norse culture in the first season, but as of season 4 I mostly watch for the epic battles, like the siege of Paris. It's mostly a soap opera with lots of stabbing at this point. Camerawork and music are still fantastic, though.

    4. I'd like the parts of the Native American history, I think. As for all the other stuff, I'll pass and take your word for it whether it is a good read or not :)

Someone definitely dropped the ball on creating the cover then, because that is kind of a major error. I've mostly avoided the show because of how violent it is.

    1. It was super tough this week, but I did not even give myself the chance to buy any books. I stuck it out, only using KU and I did okay. The books aren't great, so thank goodness I did not pay for them!

    2. Also, I'm not sure I even need to tell you anymore when I add your NF books to my TBR. Just assume I've added some unless I state otherwise, lol :D

    3. It's always interesting to see what you pick (or don't pick) from my list. I can certainly guess I few that'd pique your interest and a few that probably wouldn't... But that's just guessing. [grin]

    4. Yeah, I'm sure by now you are pretty much an expert! This time around I added American Character and the History of Europe. I'm still contemplating the PKK one.

  5. I'm trying to stay good until July :) I don't think I ever read a book about Vikings, enjoy all three. Have a wonderful day.

    1. What is going on in July that you are waiting for?? I'm really into that period in history but there is so little info because, of course nothing was written down for centuries. Argh. It's frustrating. Happy Reading, thanks for coming by!

    2. I gave myself a three month book buying ban, it ends in July :) I can understand how frustrating that is for you and others who are also interested in that period.

    3. I always SAY I am going to stop buying books for X amount of time...and I almost never stick to it. I wish you luck!

    4. I have several arbitrary rules about buying books on-line (although not IRL). They help me manage my addiction - and recognise that I *have* an addiction of course!

    5. I think I am past the point of managing, lol. But at least I am tryyyyying!

    1. I think that's the point I will be at with this coming week also - not buying, just using Kindle Unlimited here and there. I'm trying to show some restraint and, well, it stinks. Happy Reading!

    1. That's what I think too! Except the one about Bjorn was not great, and not through any fault of the authors, but we simply don't know enough about him to even justify a short book. Thank goodness for KU. Happy Reading!

  9. Ooh Vikings. Always a sucker for those!

    1. Me too...but the Bjorn one was a bit of a disappointment. I know that there is not a lot known in the way of written facts, but I thought even with a short book, there would at least be something. There were some facts about him, but a lot of it ended up being "Children in that time would have..." or "He likely..." and that is not the author's fault. BUT, I do question writing books when so little is known.

    2. That's a good point, and yeah it's tough when there's not actually a lot of facts to base it on! Kinda curious about the Kiv Books edition.

      Delete
    3. So far I feel like the KIV are similar to what I have read from Charles River Editors - a sometimes-passable cursory look, but some of the books are terrible and filled with incorrect, or at least disputed, facts. I have not read enough KIV to judge yet though.

  10. I’m also trying to be good. I’ve gotten so many books this year. I need to stop buying them and start reading them. I hope you have a great week and enjoy your new books!

    1. Yes! The last four months have been out of control! I can't decide if:

      A. I've always been this out of control and Stacking the Shelves is helping me realize it
      or
      B. I buy more to show off for Stacking the Shelves

      Honestly...it's a toss-up
