2022 Reading Goals

I am keeping things super chill once again this year because until COVID is under any semblance of control, work is going to be stressful and extra busy. Being a teacher these last two years has really been difficult, not going to lie. I love my kids, but I do not love all the extra crap piled on from people who aren't in it themselves, but are making rules and policies that impact us and the kiddos we serve.

Besides, blogging is fun and I want it to stay that way. When this becomes a chore, yikes. I don't ever want to think about that happening.

My reading goals are simple again this year:

1. Read 250 books - this is down from 275 last year. When Eleanor and I read a book together now, they are on the longer side and then means less reading time for myself. I don't mind that one bit, and will gladly read out loud to baby girl as long as she wants me to!

2. Reduce my TBR to less than 2,300 books - In 2021 my goal was to reduce it to less than 2,500 and I did not quite make it. This will be  bigger focus again this year, weeding out the books I am no longer interested, while also reading books on my TBR instead of grabbing so many new ones from the library.

3. Reduce my Upcoming Reviews to less than 150 - I mean...it's worth a try? I am growing more and more concerned that this will never happen. I have culled the list many times for books I am no longer interested in reviewing. I am also a lot more selective about books that even go on the list. I am also trying to get more comfortable doing 'Review Bomb' and 'Mini Reviews' posts.

Do you have any bookish goals for 2022? Let me know in the comments or leave a link to your post.

Happy New Year and Happy Reading!
Sarah

  1. I think that if you're going to review everything you read that at least *some* of them will need to be review bombs/short reviews. You can go for the standard/longer reviews for great books or books that you REALLY want to slag off properly. Shorter reviews for 'OK' books and even one-liners for some! I have been tempted more than once with a single word review: AVOID - but then felt to need to say *why* I hated it... [lol]

    1. I am really considering the one-liners or bullet points. Especially for the fiction I read by the same author. And regular reviews for the ones I really love and really hate, that's the way to go I think.

  2. I'm always astounded at just how many books you manage to read each year. It makes my 52 look so tiny in comparison haha. I can't wait to see what awesome reads we discover this year!

    1. Yes!! I found so many great reads in 2021 because of you, I think 2022 is also going to be a great one.

As for the amount I read...it's much easier to read a lot when you don't bother cleaning ;)

Okay, mostly kidding. But it's basically how I pass the time when Eleanor has to go to her father's house. Otherwise I would go crazy just waiting for her to get to come back home!

  3. My only reading goal is to keep reading and reviewing all the books that I read. Of course, I don't attempt to read over 200 books a year so it may be a bit easier for me than for you! I'm very choosy about the books that I spend my time with and the result is that most of them are good. That's the way I like it.

  4. I read 252 books in 2021 but my original goal was 150. This year I made it 200 and would be thrilled to be over it again! I am also planning to cull down my TBR pile a bit (actually in a few minutes!), just to get rid of stuff I know I will not read. Have fun with your goals this year :)

    1. That's an excellent goal to set, I think we will all do quite well this year. Feel free to link up with my Tackling the TBR for your TBR culling if you like. Sometimes it is such a relief to see the numbers dropping.

  6. I love that trend towards shorter/ concise reviewing. I haven't really set any goals since I'm such a mood reader, and man did my reading suck in '21!!

    1. I think that is the best way to go for me, at least for the fiction. As for my non-fiction, I always have tons more to say! Maybe 2022 will be much better for...we have more McManus to look forward to!

  7. I really hope you hit all your goals! My only goals are only reviewing books I want to review. Books I actually have something to talk about. Reading 130 books, and more nonfiction.

    1. I made that a goal one year also, to only review what I care to - whether love or loathe. Some books were just nice and there's not much I feel like saying. I can always help with the non-fiction!

  8. Nice goals. I hope you can accomplish them all. Mine is always to reduce my TBR pile. Will I ever succeed? I doubt it.

    Thanks for visiting my Statistics.

    1. You and me, both. But, I do have to say I am pretty proud of myself for getting my TBR so low, so fast. It would be an absolute dream to get below 500.

    2. I know, we all have those goals. I don't have that many on my pile but I still can't seem to get it a lot lower.

    3. I think I can make progress this year if I try to cut back on the library and focus on what I have here. I have a whole five-shelf bookcase, plus bookshelves in the headboard of my bed of books to read and sell back to Half Price Books so I can buy more!

    4. I was more or less forced to cut back on the library because the one we have here doesn't really provide anything I would want to read, so yes, that makes it a little easier. But only a little. LOL

    5. We have this really great service where our libraries will find books from other library systems around the country if they don't have something. It is something we use a lot...as if our own library doesn't have enough already, lol.

    6. Our old library did that. Not only did they have really interesting books that I wanted to read, they would get you most of the books you wanted, as well. The only reason I miss our old place.

    7. It's such a great service. Funny though, because our larger library system charges patrons for shipping but our smaller library in our town (we are in a suburb of the larger library system's city) does not.

    8. Sometimes the smaller places are more customer-friendly.

    9. Which is weird because the other system has a much larger budget...though our mayor and the board are determined ot cripple it however possible.

    10. That is really, really, sad.

    11. It is. They've decided to move our main branch out of downtown. It just happens to be in an area where many of our homeless citizens congregate. Their solution to homelessness is to...move the library. I would roll my eyes, but it is just so frustrating and sad.

    12. I totally understand. All you can do is roll your eyes or shake your head.

    13. It's just so cruel. But then again, the cruelty is the point. It infuriates me.

  9. Daaang! 250 books?! Even with children's books I don't read that much. I'm jealous. Lol
I completely hear you about work. I love my students but the lack of staff, the money-pinching, the constant new policies, and the disregard for the current staff is really ruining my vibe.

I wish you the best for 2022 though! Good luck with your goals!

    1. Vonnie! So good to see you around again! Reading is just such a stress-reliever for me, and makes time go by so fast when my daughter has to be at her dad's. I definitely would not read nearly as many of my own books if we had more time to read together. Good luck with the rest of the school year, I have a feeling we all are going to need it.
