DeleteI wanted to read some of Durst's earlier fantasy stuff, but never did... the last one looks like a good thriller. I just finished Black Coral by Andrew Mayne and you need to get it :)
ReplyDeleteThis definitely had interesting supernatural elements that were very central to the story and I liked it, but I don't know if I would read anything else by her. Not fantasy, at least, I don't think.
DeleteI sort of lost interest in her stuff, or just never got to it. Fantasy and I though seem to have had a falling out. always mt favorite genre but I'm hardly touching it these days...

ReplyDeleteThe title and cover are GREAT! The book itself was absolute rubbish. Was my second book by the author because I was giving her a second chance after I read a different awful trainwreck by her. Definitely do not recommend this one!

I've just discovered the Penguin Monarchs series covering 45 Kings/Queens since 924CE. So, after Amazon offered me £5 off if I had them delivered to my local delivery point (which I can *see* from my house) I bought the first 3. They are:
Athelstan (924-939): The Making of England by Tom Holland
Aethelred the Unready (978-1016): The Failed King by Richard Abels
Cnut (1016-1035): The North Sea King by Ryan Lavelle

DeleteNot a huge fan of the Monarchy to be honest - even the more historical branch. I'm more interested in people who got mud on their shoes (if they had shoes) than people who drank wine & ate cheese all day.
DeleteI like it just fine up to 1603, but even EI pushes my limits because she was a giant lying baby who KNEW exactly what Cecil would do once Mary, Queen of Scots' death warrant was signed. Like, the ink wasn't even dry. She had NO RIGHT to even pretend she was upset. Everything after 1603 is too modern for me. And Alfred is my most favorite, though England did not technically exist when he was king. But Athelstan! His grandson MADE ENGLAND, all because Alfred had the foresight of what the kingdoms together could be.
DeleteAlso, I hate Charles. Camilla is NOT queen.
I think the series will be a pretty good way to paper over some of the gaps in my historical knowledge - especially some of the earlier stuff - after 1066 but before the Wars of the Roses.... I'll see how it goes. They'll be FAST reads too being so short.

That is THE BEST period to read about! Though I love 1066 and the Anglo-Saxon kings, OBVIOUSLY. I lose some interest when we get to the warrior kings during the Wars of the Roses.
DeleteCharles is THE WORST. And Camilla is a toad. They deserve each other. But they don't deserve their crowns.
I've had a bit of ADHD when it comes to trying to pick my next read. I brought home 3 books from the library, attempted to start each of them, gave up, and returned all three. I just wasn't in the right mood. I've settled on a comfort series for me with John Sandford's Prey books.
ReplyDeleteComfort reads are always important. I have grabbed a lot of YA and thrillers lately, because I am falling behind on my Goodreads Challenge and it is stressing me out. YA I know I can read so fast, I will cover more ground than reading the non-fiction that I actually WANT to read right now. Luckily I was able to snag a lot of books by Jennifer Lynn Barnes, who wrote The Inheritance Games. Should help me a ton.
