First Line Friday is a weekly feature and simple to do - grab the book nearest you and post the first line. Carrie hosts this over on her blog Reading is my Superpower.
Jolting along in his buggy through the freezing night, gripping the seat with his free hand, Dr. MacGregor Porter could see the bonfire from the road.
Happy Reading!

"Early in this century, I stayed alone in a small hotel in a side street of Riga's old town. It was winter, I seemed to be the only guest and at the reception desk an unsmiling youngish woman quickly slid a key across to me as if fearing contamination."
ReplyDeleteThe Glass Wall - Lives on the Baltic Frontier by Max Egremont.
Intriguing. As long as there's no military stuff.
DeleteWell, the Baltic states were essentially occupied by one power or another for 700 years and where constantly invaded or driven through on the way to somewhere else. They've had FAR too much History for such a small area! Poor bastards...
DeleteYou know what I mean! I want the history, not JUST the military stuff about war machines and army movements and extremely detailed and boring battle descriptions. I think I'll end up giving this one a try, I know almost nothing about the Baltic States.
DeleteNo actual battles etc... just about displaced people, destroyed houses, grave sites & stuff. I think you'll like it actually. Lots of human content from real people...
DeleteThe human content in the midst of war is what is compelling to me in that regard, glad no battles are recounted in slow, excruciating detail!
