Happy First Line Friday and last day of school!
I am super late in posting this, but here it is now, short and sweet and a line from a book about a battle fought in a country I love so dearly.
"2014 sees the 700th anniversary of the Battle of Bannockburn, one of the few events that genuinely changed the direction of Scotland's history. Its outcome was far from inevitable, indeed it was a remarkably unlikely victory."

As a fellow lover of all things Scottish, I agree this is a great first line! The battle of Bannockburn was an unexpected victory and changed the course of history.

DeleteWhat an interesting front cover! I had the lovely opportunity to visit Edinburgh several years ago, and it was simply splendid...I got to tour Edinburgh Castle and Hollyrood Palace. :)
ReplyDeleteOh gosh yes, those places are amazing! The whole Royal Mile is just beautiful. I loved walking around Edinburgh Castle, but prefer Stirling Castle above all others (in Scotland, anyway). Holyrood was also amazing - to see where Mary had eaten with her ladies, and to be able to stand in the place that Rizzio was murdered was almost too much. I can't wait to go back when my daughter is old enough. Her middle name is even spelled Edin instead of Eden, because I love Edinburgh so much.
DeleteOne of the advantages of being Scottish is the historical places to visit-battlefields, castles...I love doing the tourist thing! Eilean Donan castle is so scenic...visited that a few years ago on a bus trip.
ReplyDeleteSO JEALOUS! I wish I was Scottish! I am about 99% German with a little Swede for good measure. Visiting Scotland was my mom's dream vacation so for Mother's Day in 2009 I surprised her with a trip planned for the week of her birthday. I have never felt I belonged anywhere so much as I felt it the first morning we stepped off the bus and onto the Royal Mile. It was like coming home, to a place I had never been before. We went on two day tours and we had the coolest driver, Hugh, who was not afraid to drive a big bus very fast around the bends in Trossachs! And we even did a cruise on Loch Ness, which was a blast. I think Loch Lomond was my favorite, and Stirling Castle. And Iverness. Basically, I love all of Scotland. And the Ben Doran is the cutest, best little B&B ever.

ReplyDeleteIt's a fairly slim volume, and I like it so far. I have a special place in my heart for the times that the Scots sent the English packing - however short-lived it might have been.
