First Line Friday: Buffy Edition II

First Line Friday is brought to you by Hoarding Books.

"It's been twenty-one years since Buffy Summers staked her first vampire on TV, and this extraordinary series is now widely regarded as one of the greatest ever made."

So true, so true.

Sort of.

The issue that I take with the above statement is that already a long time before 'now', Buffy has been considered one of the greatest shows ever made. This is not something recent. This is something already acknowledged during its final run, and has only grown more factual as time has gone on.

The other issue I have with the book in general already is a glaring error I discovered on pages 12-13, the Map of Sunnydale. it lists Angel's old mansion as being on Market Street when any Buffy fan knows that it was specifically referenced as a home on Crawford Street. I've seen every episode of this show DOZENS of times. I am not one to trifle with when it comes to knowledge of the Buffy-verse and I hold my Buffy texts to VERY high standards. When discussing other Buffy/Angel books, I have proclaimed time and again my undying love for this show. It was so beautiful and heartbreaking and reassuring and infuriating.

Did you ever watch Buffy and/or Angel?

Leave a comment and let me know what you think.
Happy Reading!
Sarah

  1. LOVE that cover! And yes clearly they need to get these things right. :) And can you believe I've never seen Buffy?

    1. It was very frustrating to come across these little errors because rabid fans like myself notice those mistakes. It bummed me out that a Buffy book could be disappointing. The show became the subject of college classes, so many texts about it are phenomenal. And please oh please, watch it!! The first season is a little shaky, but it is an amazing show.

  2. Never seen a Buffy episode in my life!

I'm featuring the first line from Susan May Warren's 'Storm Front' on my blog, but right now I'm going to give you the first line from 'A Worthy Groom' by Angela K. Couch, which is part of 'The Backcountry Brides Collection':

"The first shovelful of dirt struck Samuel's crude hickory box, but Lorinda Cowden didn't flinch."

    1. It's such a great show, and so well put together. The first season was a little shaky, but even with the growing pains it was amazing.

  3. Happy Friday! Ive never watched Buffy either!😀

Today my FLF is from a book I will be reading very soon, An Awakened Heart by Jody Hedlund.

“Stop prostituting yourselves and run to the loving Father who will embrace you with forgiveness.” Reverend Bedell’s voice rose above the sniffles and muffled weeping of the women crowded on trestle benches of Centre Street Chapel.

Have a great weekend and Happy Reading!📚😀

  4. I've never watched Buffy.
Over on my blog I'm sharing the first line from Mary Connealy's The Accidental Guardian. Here I'll share the first line from chapter 8 of the same book.
    "A scream jerked Trace awake."
    Have a wonderful weekend!

    1. It is such a fantastic show, it definitely stands up to the test of time - except of course for the 'primitive' Internet use, haha. Happy Reading!

  5. One of my former roommates loved Buffy. Brings back some good memories :).

I'm currently reading His Surprise Son by Allie Pleiter: "Here comes the bride. For Jean Matrim, the arrival of Matrimoney Valley's frist bride was a victory."

    Have a fabulous Friday!

    1. Good, I myself of tons of great memories of watching it with my mom and we would dissect what was happening and what we thought it would mean for the next week. Or my best friend and I would either be on the phone watching it 'together', or call one another as soon as it was over. Hope you have a wonderful weekend!

  6. Happy Friday! My first line is from Storm Front (Montana Rescue Book #5) by Susan May Warren:

"Ty Remington blamed the homemade orange marmalade cake for why he found himself huddled under an overhang off some faraway path in Glacier National Park, shivering, praying he might live through the night."

  7. I haven't watched Buffy in forever, but I agree. One of the best shows ever created.

I'm featuring Pepper Basham's, "A Twist of Faith" on my blog today. Since I have Lindsay Harrel's, "The Heart Between Us" in front of me, I'll share my first line from here.

"Amy says in order to move forward, I have to stop clinging to past."

Have a great weekend and happy reading!

    1. Finally, a watcher! :) I still enjoy watching it and I really want to show it to Eleanor, but I think four is a little young yet, haha.

  8. I loved Buffy...really need to watch the whole series again!

    1. YES! I still watch it also - though I have the original DVD sets and those things are such a pain! The menus are ridiculous and you can only watch one episode at a time, there is no play all. Ah, primitive technology, haha. I am hoping to get the new boxed set for Christmas this year.

  10. On my blog today, I'm featuring "The Substitute Wife" by Dorothy Clark. Here, I will share the first line of Chapter Three in "A Civil Contract" by Georgette Heyer, the book I'm currently reading. "When Adam left Mount Street Lord Oversley suffered some qualms of conscience, fearing that he had raised hopes that he might presently be obliged to dash to earth." I love this authors writing style. Have a wonderful weekend!

  11. Buffy *rocked* - Angel not as much or as often but it was still good watching.

My first lines are from a book I'm expecting/hoping to start on Sunday/Monday.

"The terms 'Other' or 'Others' can be understood in all sorts of ways and used in various meanings and contexts, to distinguish gender, for example, or generation, or nationality, or religion and so so. In my case I use these terms mainly to distinguish Europeans, people from the West, whites, from those whom I call 'Others' - that is, non-Europeans, or non-whites, while fully aware that for the latter, the former are just as much 'Others'."

    The Other by Ryszard Kapuscinski

    1. I watched both of them without fail, and I really liked the first couple seasons, but after Connor returned as as a teenager, I was really unhappy. And the Angel/Cordelia thing was awful. I own all five season of Angel also, but I rarely watch the later ones.

    2. Did you ever watch the un-aired pilot that the network asked Joss to re-shoot? It's both terrible and bizarre - with a *different* Willow!!!

      Delete
    3. YES!! I could not believe what I was seeing when I watched it. To have anyone playing Willow except, well, Willow, was so unfathomable to me! I am so glad that Joss took their 'advice' and re-shot it with Aliyson, otherwise the show might have been very, very different!

    4. It was really like having a peek into a different universe. After enjoying the show so much it was really difficult seeing Willow as anyone *but* Ms Hannigan - my favourite character too!!

      Delete
    5. Yeah, I can't even imagine any of that - and so much of the entire pilot was different...not that I have all the episodes memorized or anything...

I loved Willow, and I feel like her turn as a villain was one of her best performances in the entire series. Seeing her evolution was awesome, though I could not stand Tara or Kennedy. Tara was so meek and Kennedy was the polar opposite. I wish she could have had a normal girlfriend!

    6. LOVED both Evil Willow and especially Vampire Willow..... I'm sure she had great fun playing multiple versions of herself. I really need to watch Buffy again @ some point.

    7. Oh man, Wishverse Will was pretty badass too, but scary vein-y Will is my fave of the alter-egos.

  12. I've only seen a few episodes of Buffy but really don't remember anything about it.
The book I'm sharing on my blog is The Road Home by Beverly Lewis but here I'll share the book I just finished today called A Higher Ransom by Aleigha C Israel: "Anna Haddington took a deep breath of the salty air."

    1. Well, if you get the chance I highly recommend watching again! The first season is a little rough, but worth it.

  13. They should have asked you to fact check :D
I'm sharing from my current read, No Less Days by Amanda G. Stevens, on my blog today, so here is the first line from an upcoming read, Reclaiming Shilo Snow by Mary Weber:

"The moment Earth's United World Council officially placed seventeen-year-old Sofi Snow at the top of their Imminent Terrorist Threat list, a siren went off in the circular downtown building, and she became the most wanted teenager alive."

    Happy Friday!

    1. YES! I would have LOVE that job! It's kind of funny the things that stick with us as adults. The show ended 15 years ago, and I still feel like I know the show as well now as a 35 year old as I did when I was 15. I've re-watched it several times, but you'd think over time some of those memories would fade. But nope! That knowledge is all still there!

  14. I never watched Buffy, but I would have liked to.

Today I'm sharing the first line of That's Amore by Marion Ueckermann on my blog. It's the first book in the new multi-author Tuscan Legacy series. I'm now reading the third book, Rapsodia (Rhapsody) by Alexa Verde. Here's the first line:

Marco Carter would rather spend a day in a pit with snakes than an hour on a plane.

Personally, I love flying and hate snakes. What about you?

    1. Well now is as good a time as any to start! The first season was a little shaky but so worth it. Such a great show, I will always recommend watching it, to pretty much everyone. On the surface it looks like just a show about vampires and demons and witches, but it truly is so much more than that. So many represent things that we face in real life and it was such an empowering, amazing show.

I would definitely choose flying over snakes, for sure!

  15. I still haven't gotten around to it, but I want to. I was hoping it would surface on Netflix or Amazon prime, but I may just have to buy a used DVD set...

    1. Both Buffy and Angel were taken off Netflix in the fall-ish of 2017. It was still on Hulu last I knew, but an investment in the DVDs is well worth it. Best show ever.

  16. I loved watching Buffy! Perhaps not to the extent of your fandom, but my sister and I could quote dialogue to each other. I had quite a crush on Spike :-)

    1. I am an extreme fangirl, that's for sure. There was a time in my life where I could pretty much respond to any social interaction with a BtVS quote. Once, I stayed home "sick" because David Boreanaz was going to be on the local radio morning show. Mom knew I wasn't sick and let me stay home anyway - and later that night told me she knew exactly why I was really staying home.

I thought Spike was cute and hilarious, but Angel was always My Guy. After season 6 though, I could never look at Spike the same way after the bathroom incident with Buffy. Season 6 all around was tough.
