First Line Friday: Still on the Mend/Mafia Edition

In case you missed it, I was in the ER Sunday and admitted to the hospital overnight. I said a little something about it HERE. While I am still on the mend (and at home, not in the hospital), I am basically laying in bed, sleeping and reading. I am also very lucky that I had all of my weekly posts ready to go and am not having to spend much time typing them up when I should be resting, which is what I am about to go do again. That being said, I will respond to all comments and make my usual visits in a few days, when I am feeling up to it.

First Line Friday is brought to you by Hoarding Books.

"The hundreds of thousands of drivers who travel each day along the Grand Central Parkway in the Borough of Queens in New York City likely never give much noticed to the small urban cemetery of St. Michael's."

I have been pretty good with not requesting from NetGalley because I am so behind on ARC reviews, but I could not pass this one up.

The Godfather is easily one of my favorite movies of all time, and is part of two very rare exceptions:

1. The movie is better than the book
2. The sequel is at least as good, but truly better, than Part I

So, it is hard for me to pass up anything Mafia-related and so far, this biography is every bit as good as I hoped it would be.

Leave a comment and let me know what you think.

Happy Reading!
Sarah

  1. Happy Friday! Wow, that's some pile of books!😊😊 beautiful!!!

My first lines come from a book I will be reading later this month, The Christmas Sisters by Sarah Morgan.

There are good anniversaries, and bad anniversaries . This was a bad one and Suzanne chose to mark the moment with a nightmare.

Have a great weekend and Happy Reading!😊📚💖

    1. Thank you so much Carrie. I was at the dr this morning for a follow-up and she wants me to rest today and through the weekend, and go back to work Monday. It is so hard to miss this week, since there are now only ten days left of school after this, but I have to take care of myself. I'm feeling better every day and having less and less pain. By Monday I should be good to go!

  3. Sarah, I wish you a speedy recovery. On my blog today, I am featuring a book by Georgette Heyer, "A Civil Contract." Here, I will share the first line of chapter 10 in that same novel. "Few invitations conferred so great a distinction on the social aspirant as one to Nassington House." Enjoy our weekend!

  5. The book I'm sharing on my blog is Unblemished by Sara Ella but I'm currently reading called The Road Home by Beverly Lewis. I shared the first line last week so I'll share the first line of chapter 22 where I am right now: " The next morning, after the four o'clock milking and a nice hot breakfast, Mimi suggested Harley take a lemon pound cake over to Abram Mast's for his birthday." Cake anyone? :P (I actually don't like it though lol).

  6. Good to hear that you're on the road to recovery and are using your time productively - READING!

Here's my rather intriguing first line(s):

"The woman sitting across from me in a bustling Brooklyn diner is a sixty-eight year old grandmother now, freckled and still very attractive. She has warm eyes and short silver hair combed over her ears. She wears a long-sleeved pink blouse. At her side her five-month old grandson burbles in his stroller. By training she is a math teacher. She has taught almost thirty years in the New York schools. This was what she decided to do when she got out of jail."

Days of Rage - America's Radical Underground, the FBI, and the Forgotten Age of Revolutionary Violence by Bryan Burrough.

    1. Intriguing indeed, thanks for sharing!

The road to recovery is getting shorter and shorter, I anticipate being back at work on Monday for good - there are only ten student days left now!

  7. NetGalley is a booklovers paradise. Or downfall. Take your pick.

I'm sharing the very long first line from A Defense of Honor from the new Haven Manor series by Kristi Ann Hunter on my blog today. It was one of those read-in-a-day books :) Yes, I got it from NetGalley.

I’m currently reading Just Let Go by Courtney Walsh (also from NetGalley), a romance about a woman wanting to reconnect with the mother who abandoned her years ago. But the first line is from the viewpoint of the hero:

    He shouldn’t be here.
A diner in some little tourist town in Michigan was no place for Grady Benson, but here he was.

    Have a great weekend!

    1. It is a bit of both for me. When I first started, I did not pay enough attention to how things worked. I went on a spree and requested a ton of books, which I got approved for. It took ages and ages for me to get to 80%, but now that I have been there a while I am much more selective about what I request. Happy Reading!

    1. Thank you so much Heather, I appreciate all of those things <3

I am feeling the best today that I have since the whole ordeal started. I can't believe it was already almost a week ago. It went by fast - probably because I spent most of the time sleeping and reading :)
