Stacking the Shelves 18

Stacking the Shelves is a weekly feature co-hosted by Tynga's Reviews and Reading Reality. It is a chance to showcase all the goodies you've collected throughout the week, whether they're bought on-line or in-store, an ARC or a final copy, borrowed from a friend or the library, physical or digital, etc. Never has my addiction been more obvious than when I am now keeping track of every single book I acquire.

  3. I hope you love the rest of these books. I'm sad that the Buffy one didn't live up to your expectations.

    1. Me too, thank you! I think because the show was sooooo good, I expect all books to be the same - and I guess I expect the writers to fan girl as hard as I do because, why else would you write a book about Buffy if you aren't really interested??!!

I also finished the book about Emmett Till last night and it was a very good book, and I cried a lot. But it is an important read and I wish everyone would do so.

  4. I'm going to guess that NT Apocalyptic addresses psuedo-gospels like the Gospel of Judas, Gospel of Mary Magdalene, and the Infancy narratives? I bought "The Ayatollah Begs to Differ: The Paradox of Modern Iran" and promptly read it through...and last night I bought "Fire and Blood", a history of Mexico. It was on sale, possibly for Cinco de Mayo, but I'd planned to interlibrary loan or purchase it this year for my Peoples of the Americas series.

    1. It's actually about interpreting the apocalyptic literature, without looking at the texts with a prophecy foundation. As a congregation, our church read The Story this year for most small groups and our last meeting of the year was this past Wednesday. Instead of reading from The Story, our group decided to actually read Revelations from start to finish, and our pastor brought a few additional texts along for those who wanted to better understand all the wackiness. We also have decided to meet next week even though groups are officially 'done', since we spent the whole time reading the entire book and did not get the chance to discuss anything.

I think I have Fire and Blood, on my Kindle - is it one from new Horizon? I feel like that publisher is hit and miss, but I think it was only $1.99 at the time.

    2. ..I'm such a dork, I misread apocalyptic as apocryphal. One interesting perspective on Revelations I've read is Scott Hahn's 'Lamb's Supper", which sees early Christian liturgy as part of the book's structure.

Re: Fire and Blood, the publisher on mine is identified as Open Road Media.

    3. I thought that might've been the case :) But no worries - those subjects are always super interesting to me too even though I don't put much stock in them. I have read a couple books about the so-called Gospel of Judas though.

I double-checked and mine is the same one. I was thinking of a different book about Mexico. Haven't read it yet, let me know what you think!

    4. It's a big one (700+ pages), but I should be done by the end of the week if I keep plugging away!

    5. Yeah, I can't afford to start any of those huge books right now, with my own writing going full steam ahead. I've made a lot of progress today though, so I can sneak a few shorter books in here and there.

    1. Here you go, adding books to my TBR! I only took one this week, the Alfred book.

I always tell myself the next week will be lighter. It never is. we must stop lying to ourselves.

    2. I actually thought when I picked the Alfred book up: "I bet Sarah will like this." [lol]

    3. YES! Those Anglo-Saxons are among my faves. Isn't it amazing how quickly we not only pick up on what our book buddies like most, but that out in the real world we see books that remind us all of one another?

    1. It did to me too - but if you are a Buffy fan, don't buy it. I made that mistake. I had high hopes for it, but there were some errors that no Buffy fan can forgive. Like, there is a map of Sunnydale and it places Angel's old mansion on Market Street. Everyone knows it was on CRAWFORD. There are some other things too and I'm just bummed it was not as good as everything else that has come out for the 20th anniversary.

    1. Our church has been reading The Story since August, as a congregation in small groups. Last week we read the final chapter, dealing with Revelations, and this was an extra text my pastor brought along for anyone who wanted to better understand the wackiness of the final book.

    2. The final cover ended up being blue, which is weird to me because I think the red one looks better and less cartoonish. Plus, hello, red. Blood, vampires, you know? Sadly, they did not ask me.

    3. I really should make sure I have said everything I want to say before I hit publish! I get the blueish cover because, nighttime. But I still think the red was better.

    4. Ha ha I do that all the time! And we were using the Story as well, it's been pretty popular in our congregation. I always think/ hope I'll "get" Revelations more when I read it, but I still struggle lol as I'm sure many of us do. I should look into this particular book.

I like the red cover too, although I went over to see th blue cover and I... kinda like it? With the big moon... either one would look good on the shelf!

    5. Revelations is SO crazy! Last week we ended up reading Revelations from the Bible itself instead of The Story, so we decided to meet as a group this week and talk about all the questions we had - like, Jesus' thigh tattoo, all the crazy numbers besides seven, etc. It is a trip, for sure. I started that Apocalyptic book but I don't think I am in the right frame of mind right now, so I am going to try and read it later this summer.

    1. Thanks Barb - I have to admit though, it was not as great as I was hoping for and I kind of wanted to be really sad about it. There's been some great new texts with the 20th anniversary and this had some errors that simply don't fly if one is a true Buffy fan. The concept is super cool though and I feel like if it had had some adjustments, I'd be much happier about it.
