Stacking the Shelves 19

Stacking the Shelves is a weekly feature co-hosted by Tynga's Reviews and Reading Reality. It is a chance to showcase all the goodies you've collected throughout the week, whether they're bought on-line or in-store, an ARC or a final copy, borrowed from a friend or the library, physical or digital, etc. Never has my addiction been more obvious than when I am now keeping track of every single book I acquire.

Wishes DO come true! I have had this book on my NetGalley Wishlist for a long while and this week I was randomly selected as one to receive the book. I've never gotten one of these before!

St Marks is pretty special to me and I read it a couple years ago, but I had to have my own copy. You can check out my review HERE. At the end of the book Calhoun lists all the pop culture references to St Marks in movies, television, music, etc. In the hardcover version, the episode of Friends that first introduced me to St marks was not included. I mentioned this to her on Twitter and am happy to report that it made it into the paperback version!

  1. Prime Minister of the Mafia sounds interesting. Is this true crime?

    Have a great weekend!

    1. Yes, it is a biography of Frank Costello. I love books about the Mafia, particularly the 'Five Families' so to speak, and NYC.

    2. Sarah, have you read "Boss of Bosses" about Paul Castellano? It's by the FBI agents who monitored and then arrested him. I'm mostly interested in the Mob in the Luciano/Lanksy/Bonanno era, back when the immigrant status of Italians REALLY made the Italian families a society into themselves. After the a few generations of born-in-america hoods take over, it's just not as fascinating anymore.

    1. Oh yes, they've been just lovely while I was recuperating and I am well into most of them already.

  3. Well, it's been a while coming but..... NONE for me this week. Nada, zero, zip..... At least it'll give me a little breathing space before my next mass purchase (whenever that will be). There's a few due out around now that I should be picking up before long. But until then.... [lol]

    1. This is amazing! I wonder if there will ever be a week where I haul nothing. I don't think it is possible.

    1. Thanks, I was super psyched to get both of them. I have been kind of burned out on Revolutionary War lately, but I still am super interested in the Washington one because I love a good city biography and I think this will be a decent one.

I read One of Us is Lying in a couple hours. I was super bummed to have had the book accidentally spoiled in regards to Simon's death only in saying how he physically died. At least the unraveling story was still a surprise to me and how he pulled it off, and why. I enjoy an occasional YA venture and this one was awesome.

  5. Both of those NetGalley books look good! It's a fun bit of trivia that Washington was the only president to never live in the Executive Mansion. The "Federal City" was just a swamp and some grandiose street plans back then!

    1. Oh, and for mine...I purchased "Unseen Mirrors: Travels in Iran" and sent for "The Ministry of Guidance Invites You Not to Stay", about both Iran. I was STRONGLY tempted to buy "Exploding the Phone", about phone hacking (or "phreaking"), but forced myself to send in an interlibrary loan request for it instead.

    2. Have you read Empire of Mud: The Secret History of Washington DC? I read it a couple years ago and really liked it.
