Stacking the Shelves #24

Stacking the Shelves is a weekly feature co-hosted by Tynga's Reviews and Reading Reality. It is a chance to showcase all the goodies you've collected throughout the week, whether they're bought on-line or in-store, an ARC or a final copy, borrowed from a friend or the library, physical or digital, etc. Never has my addiction been more obvious than when I am now keeping track of every single book I acquire.

This almost never happens! ONLY TWO! And, these were actually ordered about a month ago and only arrived on Monday.

What did you add to your stash this week?

Happy Reading!
Sarah

    1. Well, it is more so due to the fact that I am starting to receive my bills from that short hospital stay a month ago, and I have to be an adult and pay those bills :-/

    3. Ha, right?? This "being a grown-up thing" is NO FUN! But, it's not like I don't have a five-shelf TBR bookcase calling me...

    1. I've read quite a bit on Columbine lately, as it was really the major one that occurred when I was in high school, and then suddenly Parkland happens this year and, so many have happened between Columbine and Parkland, and THEN the one in Santa Fe, Texas. It's too much. One child dead is too many.

  4. No books for me, but EA was selling The Sims 4 for $10, so I totally went for it. But I'm away from my PC this weekend - -dogsitting again -- and have so far read two books since Thursday. I'll be in the market for more shortly..

    1. Thank you Katie! I've read quite a few books on Columbine since Parkland and Santa Fe happened. I'm not exactly sure why, maybe because it was the major one that occurred while I was in high school? But now I am a teacher and I guess maybe I am just trying to make sense of it all.

    2. I was in high school when Columbine happened as well. - Katie

    3. Did your school deal with prank copy-cats afterward? Our school received several bomb threats after Columbine and each time we had to evacuate the school to a different location. One threat came with literally twenty minutes left in the school day and we were held past the final bell, and it was a huge mess. The second one occurred right in the middle of an AP US History test, which if you pass you get college credit for. When the announcement came to evacuate the building, we refused to leave and our poor proctor didn't know what to do. We argued that we were finishing our test and it was not real anyway. He had to get the principal to force us to leave. It always made me so furious that there were people I went to school with every day who thought it was a great joke to capitalize off of another school's tragedy just to get out of school for a while.

  6. Only TWO. Very impressive [looks impressed].

It *was* going to be two for me this week but one arrived in the post this morning. They are:

    Fiction:

    Munich by Robert Harris
    Dark Pines by Will Dean

    Non-Fiction:

Never Surrender - Winston Churchill & Britain's Decision to Fight Nazi Germany in the Fateful Summer of 1940 by John Kelly

    1. RIIIIIGGHHTTTT?? TWO! That is my BEST EVER! Or, my worst, depending on what we want to call best and worst. It is my best haul in that I spent no money. It is my worst haul since it is only two books. But I have to be an adult and take care of that darn hospital bill form early May now, so it may be a bit before I acquire anything new :'(

    2. Luckily hospital bills aren't something we really do in this country. I've never had anything major done - x-rays, stitches, blood tests, that sort of thing - but it was all free in the sense that no actually money changed hands and I was never billed for anything.

But not buying a few books here and there isn't too bad a price to pay for better health.

    3. ER services, an overnight stay, etc get pricey here but my insurance is really good. Without it, my bill just for that Sunday afternoon to Monday afternoon would have been over $20,000. While $2500 is still a lot, it is lower than I expected. I have two more follow-up visits but those should not be terrible. One is an ultrasound to look at my kidney and the other is the office visit with the doctor. I'll be happy when it is all done though!

    1. I am looking forward to it! I find his works a little more balanced in regards to Richard III, though he is a Ricardian. Some Ricardians are craaaaazy!

  8. Congrats on only two! I actually hauled more last week xD I've been hauling less too. I guess I'll just have to read more to make up for it :D

    1. Thank you very much! I had a brief hospital stay and at-home recovery thing going on for the four days following, so now my hospital bills are starting to arrive and I have to be an adult and pay those instead of buying books. But I suppose I can be content with all my other treasures from literally every other week before this, haha :D

  9. Sarah, nothing wrong with 2 books, I'm going to do a self imposed book ban soon. I've probably got enough books to read for my entire lifetime between my shelves and Kindle, but I still keep buying and borrowing 🙄

    1. I am the same way! I have a five-shelf book case that is over-flowing. Books are stacked two deep on this five shelf case, plus I have some stacked right in front of the shelf on an end table. And I have almost 700 on my Kindle. I don't NEED new books, and I have to start being a little more responsible. Mostly because I was in the hospital overnight in the beginning of May, and now I need to pay that bill. But once it is done, I'll be back to my old ways :D

  10. The Secret Queen looks interesting!
I hope you get that hospital bill cleared ok. When I hear about expenses like that it makes me so grateful for the NHS.

    1. Yeah, health care here is completely screwed up and will be for a long time, thanks to the incompetency of the government right now. Altogether, right now everything is about $3000. Which, it could be worse, as the bills BEFORE insurance topped out around $25,000. OI!
