Stacking the Shelves #31

Stacking the Shelves is a weekly feature co-hosted by Tynga's Reviews and Reading Reality. It is a chance to showcase all the goodies you've collected throughout the week, whether they're bought on-line or in-store, an ARC or a final copy, borrowed from a friend or the library, physical or digital, etc. Never has my addiction been more obvious than when I am now keeping track of every single book I acquire.

I have cancelled my KU subscription for the time being. I have too many other things going on right now, with my own writing, an already-massive TBR, and school starting up again.

  1. Interesting to see a book on Napoleon's elba time. He wasn't there very long, but it was his private kingdom.

    I've picked up..
    The Believing Brain, Michael Shermer
    Pirate Cinema, Corey Doctorow
    and
    Iron Wind: Europe under Hitler

The last was a $2.99 REAL book sale. Not passing it up!

    1. Yeah, I'm not really into Napoleon but I thought it would be interesting because there is so little written about him and that period. The author had a great book I liked a couple years ago about the making of Monte Carlo, which I definitely recommend.

Let me know when you finish Iron Wind and what you think of it!

    1. I can never resist browsing Llewellyn on NetGalley. I am auto-approved by them so every month or two I go looking for the newest paranormal releases. I finished the castles one already and it was decent enough. I am having a hard time with the WWII one though, because so far it is basically a compilation taken of stories posted on message boards and in newspapers. But, I am only 10% in, so I am reserving too harsh a judgment for the time being.

I also just finished Death in Paris. I also loved the cover, but am not totally sold on the characters yet. I could not connect with them, though I did enjoy the mystery aspect.

  5. So many spooky books. I’m always tempted by creepy books, but then they sit on my shelf for 6 months before I read them. It’s not the genre I reach for first. Have a great week. Enjoy your new books.

    1. I don't do other kinds of spooky/scary (like demons, hell no, stay away) but I do enjoy paranormal books related to 'hauntings', especially when they are about places I have visited.

  6. I've looked into KU before, but think I'd just be paying to stack my TBR list. Maybe if my NetGalley addiction ever wears thin I'll reconsider it!

    1. Oh gosh yes!! That is kind of what happened, until I took the time to actually look on KU for books already on my TBR. I found quite a few, so that was really helpful. I tried the 30 day trial of KU and Prime at the same time and book-wise KU was the better deal for me.

  7. Trail of Terror looks like a perfect Halloween read. I'm off to request it now! I also like the haunted castles book. I've always wanted to visit some castles. Sadly, not many here in the US huh?

    1. I like Estep's work. I have read a couple other of his books and enjoy the way he explains his methodology and such for approaching an investigation. Not long ago he had a great one about investigating a haunted medieval prison that had been turned into a home/ Holy moly, I had to read with all the lights in the whole darn apartment on!

Castles are one of my most fave things ever. I have been lucky to see quite a few of them in the UK. I think Stirling, in Scotland, is my most most most fave. But it is hard to choose!
