The eighties movie one sounds fun!
ReplyDeleteMy book-buying ban is temporarily lifted during Christmas, so I purchased:
_ "Why We Are Here", a photo/essay book about Mobile by E.O. Wilson
- "Rubbish: The Archaeology of Garbage"
- "The Origin of Feces"
As well as six books for my oldest sister, whose birthday is not long after Christmas. From the library, I checked out Bernard Cornwell's newest, "Sword of Princes".
I definitely agree that books can not be banned from purchase in December. Or January, because that is when my birthday is. I could probably come up with a reason as to why a book ban should not be allowed in any month, now that I think about it...
DeleteI borrowed The Dutch House by Ann Patchett from a friend. I bought The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexander Dumas because Carlos Ruiz Zafon, author of the Shadow of the Wind series, says that to get a deeper understanding of his books, one should read Dumas. The Count of Monte Cristo features in the third in the series, The Prisoner of Heaven. I read that one recently, review to come someday...

DeleteI find John F. Kennedy super interesting. He's one of the few US presidents I actually know anything about and, sadly, the curiosity is fuelled mostly due the fact he was assassinated. :/

I feel like there is so much nostalgia for him, because there was so much left for him to accomplish. I actually read a "non-fiction alternative history" book, written as though Kennedy was not assassinated and it went on to detail policies and such in his second term. The nostalgia for his son is the same way, so much potential was lost when JFK Jr died, too. People mourned him, and also what might have been.

All of the Mercy Watts books have funky covers like that and they tie into the story so well. The gimmick in this series is that Mercy bears a striking resemblance to Marilyn Monroe and it kind of makes her life really hard a lot of the time, especially when she is trying to work cases for her dad, who is a private detective.
