First Line Friday #127

First Line Friday is brought to you by Hoarding Books. Playing along is easy: open the book nearest you and share the first line. Then check out the link to see the other first lines posted this week.

"At 8:30 a.m. on November 8th, 2018, John Sedwick pounded on his daughter's bedroom door."

This one is deeply personal to me. One of my good friends has lived in Paradise for several years and after a stint here in Nebraska for a couple years as our church's youth pastor, she moved back home. Until I finally heard from her, this one was one of the longest days of my life, just waiting. Her stories, the videos and photos she sent, absolutely devastating. When they say the entire town was nearly decimated, this is not hyperbole. She and her boyfriend were incredibly lucky in that their home remained, while nearly every other home in their neighborhood was at least partially or fully destroyed. I thank God every single day that He kept them safe, and pray for those who did not survive, as well as their families.

Leave a comment and let me know what you think, and leave a link to your FLF so I can stop by to see what you've posted this week.

Happy Reading!
Sarah

    1. Me too. It was awful and I wasn't even there. My friend was lucky; her parents and siblings all lost everything. Absolute tragedy on top of tragedy, but all made it out safely.

    1. Thank you, it was such a terrible ordeal. I can't imagine experiencing it firsthand. Secondary was bad enough.

  3. Definitely a personal read for you!

    Here's mine (definitely NOT personal):

"To the outside world Edward, Prince of Wales and future King Edward VIII, had the air of a golden boy."

    1. Very much so. It was a very scary day.

I go back and forth all the time on if I am really interested in Edward's story or not. Sometimes I think I am but then I lose interest again.

    2. I'll be finishing it tomorrow. It reads pretty much like a political thriller at times. I knew some details but didn't realise a lot of what happened around the case.

    3. I may have to take a look at this one then. Sounds like there's a lot to the story that I don't know.

  5. I fear this year will be just as bad, if not worse. It sounds like your prayers helped your friend.

"There was a feeling I got before I spoke in front of an audience and sometimes also before an event that was less public but still important, an event that could have had consequences in my life..."

    1. I worry about that too, with how dry it has been. They've since moved to a home out of Paradise toward Magalia. I don't think I will ever stop worrying about them, especially now that they have two little ones.

  6. "Hear ye the history of the most holy vessel that is called Graal, wherein the precious blood of the Saviour was received on the day that He was put on rood and crucified in order that He might redeem His people from the pains of hell.

I'm sharing the first line from Manor for Sale, Baron Included by Esther Hatch: https://christianfictiongirl.blog/2021/04/09/first-line-friday-179/. It's a fun book. I highly recommend it. Currently, I'm finishing up Night Fall by Nancy Mehl so I'll share from there.
"When he opened the store's door, he found an old man sitting behind a counter, his head down, snoring."
Hope you have a wonderful weekend! 😀❤📚

I used to marvel at the way my Great Mimi’s arthritic fingers would pinch her eyeliner pencil and trace a perfect stroke of midnight black along her upper lash line.
