Stacking the Shelves #35

Stacking the Shelves is a weekly feature co-hosted by Tynga's Reviews and Reading Reality. It is a chance to showcase all the goodies you've collected throughout the week, whether they're bought on-line or in-store, an ARC or a final copy, borrowed from a friend or the library, physical or digital, etc. Never has my addiction been more obvious than when I am now keeping track of every single book I acquire.

Tax Refund Treasures! (Half Price Books)
I know, I know, but I have been soooooo good about not buying books for MONTHS. Each year I set aside a small amount of $$$ from our tax refund to get some new books for Eleanor and me. Now I know what you are thinking, seeing as how I have a huge five shelf bookcase of unread books, but hush. The M.R. James addition was a total fluke. Last year at his book signing/Templars talk, Dan Jones spoke about MR James and completely by accident I found this collection.

BONUS: Not all of the titles are new to my TBR! Six were already on there, so I only added seven new titles.

    1. Thank you, it was the best way to convey exactly what I was thinking :)

      Realm Divided is gorgeous!

  2. At some point I'll read Michelle Obama's book when it comes down in price! It's always fun to get a nice book haul to enjoy!

    1. It's so good! I don't want it to be over, because then I have to go back to the reality of having trumplethinskin in the White House instead of the Obamas.

  3. The Eiffel Tower book looks interesting. I'll look out for that one. The Home book is on my 'interest' list so I'll look forward to your review. The Romanov book is on my Amazon Wish List. I've read one by her before which was very good. I have three more of her's one of which is already in my 'read next' pile.

    My haul this week:

    Fiction:

Night Flight to Paris by David Gilman
All The Beautiful Lies by Peter Swanson
The Secrets You Hide by Kate Helm
    Salt Lake by William Shaw

    Non-Fiction:

The Rise and Fall of the Dinosaurs by Steve Brusatte
Chernobyl - History of a Tragedy by Serhii Plokhy
Brexit and the End of Empire by Danny Dorling and Sally Tomlinson

    1. I'm not terribly interested in France, but there is something about the Eiffel Tower that has always mesmerized me. I've also read some of Rappaport's other work, and have The Romanov Sisters on my Kindle waiting for me.

I already have the Brusatte book on my list, but love finding new Chernobyl books that I have not seen before and added that one to my TBR.

Not too shabby, nice haul this week!

    2. I think that the Eiffel tower was only planned to be a temporary structure during an Exhibition and was to be removed afterwards.... Can you imagine Paris *without* the tower???

Another Chernobyl book I was looking at was Chernobyl Prayer: A Chronicle of the Future by Svetlana Alexievich which looks interesting.

I LOVE dinosaurs.... and not just because of Jurassic Park! As a child I loved the herbivores (maybe I wanted to be a Veggie way back then!) with my faves being Stegosaurus and especially Triceratops. Of course the Velociraptors are up there in my faves now!

There should be a BIG haul on the 14th. I'll let you know how I did in your next stacking post!

    3. I didn't know that, that's pretty cool. All I really know about the history of the tower is that people absolutely hated it and thought it was an eye-sore.

I have that Chernobyl book on my TBR already, whew. For a minute there I thought I was going to have to add yet ANOTHER book, lol.

I still love dinosaurs too. The first movie I ever saw in theatres was Land Before Time. I loved Cera, and started spelling my name that way and was forever vexing my teachers over how to spell my name. I dig the Velociraptors also, and long for the simpler time when all of these terrifying beasts were not covered with feathers...

I don't know if I am looking forward to your haul or dreading it - it could really mess with my TBR!!!

    4. I was partially right (as I often am!) "Eiffel had a permit for the tower to stand for 20 years. It was to be dismantled in 1909, when its ownership would revert to the City of Paris. The City had planned to tear it down (part of the original contest rules for designing a tower was that it should be easy to dismantle) but as the tower proved to be valuable for communication purposes, it was allowed to remain after the expiry of the permit." - [From Wiki]

It's interesting how the look of dinosaurs have changed over the years as we learn more about them. I do have trouble seeing them in my mind with downy feathers though! Scales, yes! Feathers? Not so much... [lol]

It's possible that I might not come back with as much as I hope. One of the shops parent companies has just gone bust so it might not be there any more. The other shop can be a bit hit & miss so..... I guess we'll see.

    5. It will be an interesting read then, to learn all the hows and whys.

I know that scientific discoveries are great and all, but I can not stomach dinos with feathers, I just can't.

Maybe the shop will still be there and have tons of great sales since they're going out of business?

  4. Hmmm...I haven't heard of any of these books except the Michelle Obama book. I hope you enjoy all your books!

    1. Michelle's book is so good, I love her SO. MUCH. I am sadly almost done with it already, and then I have to go back to the reality of having a completely disgusting trumplethinskin and his horrible wife in office.

  5. Haha, I immediately spent all of my Christmas money on books, even though I have a whole shelf of unread ones. No regrets. I hope you enjoy all these. A few of them are on my TBR list.

    1. Thank you! I pretty much want to read them all at once, so that is what Eleanor and I will be doing on this snowy, windy day!

  7. Only one book bought this week: a used paperback copy of the 1963 Selected Poems of Gwendolyn Brooks. (I read a poem a day and this is my latest venture.) But I have many books requested at my libraries that need to be picked up next week. I bought the hardcover of Becoming the week it came out. Worth it! Now I am the lending library for my reading group friends. I am happy to know it is making the rounds.

    1. It is SO WORTH IT. I tore through it so fast, but at the same time didn't want it to end, because then I had to come back to the reality of the trash we have occupying the White House now and it makes me so sad. I miss having a POTUS and FLOTUS who genuinely wanted to help the whole country, not just the people who voted them into the White House.

    2. Less than two years, we can survive. It would be great if everyone got impeached, but I think that might be asking too much.

  8. I didn't know you enjoyed so many historical novels. I'm slightly terrified and curious by The Italian Boy. I listened to a review of The Race to Save the Romanovs and it's good but it might be difficult to read if you don't know the history behind it.
I haven't gotten my tax refund yet but it's all going to student loans ):
I have been organizing and found a bunch of gift cards for Barnes and Noble that I haven't used so I got three books in this series I loved as a teenager. I also used some cash back bonus to get the last book I needed in the series as well so I'm happy. The series is The Lying Game by Sara Shepard.

    1. I don't read many novels, but history is definitely my thing. Once the world starts becoming too modern (around the early 1600s), I start to lose interest. But give me knights, castles, and crusades, and I AM THERE.

My loans are so astronomical, that it is not even worth it for me to make big payments (out of state tuition is a killer). But my specific job allows for 100% loan forgiveness at the end of 120 payments so, there's that to look forward to, some day...

I really like the beginning of the Pretty Little Liars series, when it was supposed to be just the four books. Even after book #8 I was still into it. But then the rest of the series was so ridiculous and convoluted - but you can bet I still kept reading to see what a hot mess it became. I looked up The Lying Game series on Goodreads and I think I will have to read it. Thanks for the tip!

  9. I tend to spoil myself after I get my tax return too.. I'll buy like 6 credits on audible, get a new tattoo, and usually some new clothes... This year we'll have to get our cars inspected and all that fun adult stuff. Yay. I haven't heard of a single one of those books, but I see a few I'd like to check out based on the cover.

    1. I definitely used to do the same thing! Once I took my mom on her dream vacation to Scotland with a refund and it was the most glorious week. But yes, being an adult means now it all goes towards bills and debt. That's why I always save at least a little of it for beautiful books, because the majority goes towards the boring stuff!

  10. I love where you've got "Six were already on there, so I only added seven new titles"! But bought with a refund makes them effectively free books, right?!
