State of the ARC #13

State of the ARC is a monthly feature hosted by Avalinah's Books. I am so glad I stumbled upon it, because it helped me so much in tackling my ARC list in 2018. Now things are under control, and this post doesn't cause me as much worry as it used to. Links go to Goodreads, unless I have finished the review, in which case it goes to that. All ARCs are from NetGalley or Edelweiss, unless otherwise noted.

Easily my worst month ever. I have been seriously slacking on reviews and have nearly one hundred to write. I got so caught up in the Tackling the TBR challenge that Chuckles started, that I let everything else fall to the side.

  1. I quit taking ARCs a couple years ago. I have enough guilt trying to keep up with reviews of books I have read. Now, when I learn about a new book coming out that I want to read, I request it at the library. If it doesn't get read, I have to return it. I think it is good to do our best to keep up but I needed to remember that I read for my own joy and to honor the authors that I love. I blog to give recognition to those authors and to highlight the books I find good or great, to warn against the ones I found a waste of my precious reading time. For me NetGalley and Edelweiss began to make me feel like the bad old days when I abused credit cards. (I reread my comment and I am sorry if it sounds a bit preachy. Just trying to relay my experience.)

    1. Doesn't sound preachy at all! I love NetGalley, but have found that Edelweiss has been very hit-or-miss for me, and so I only ever read three or four books from that site and don't log in there much anymore. I am very strict about which books I will request on NetGalley and it is never a genre that I am iffy on, it has to be from my core of most favorites. I have also been really good now about what books I accept directly from authors and publishers, same rules apply. I have just become more stringent in enforcing my own rules, but this month was tough because I have been in a review slump. Spring Break starts for me on Friday, but my daughter does not have hers until April, so I will be spending a lot of time getting my huge backlog of reviews done and next month's State of the ARC will look much, much better!

  2. awww for an "off" month - I can definitely relate to the struggle of trying to keep up with ARCs and do reading challenges at the same time, it's a pretty difficult balance! and five books is definitely much better than none - hopefully you enjoyed them! 💕

    1. Thank you Isabelle! It was an off month all around with reviews I felt like, but Spring Break starts on Friday for me and goes all next week, so I think I will get quite a lot accomplished in that time. Happy Reading!

  3. That's a lot of reviews to write so you have my sympathy! I'm gradually getting through my backlog but now I'll be adding my March reads to the list so I must keep on top of things!

    1. Oh gosh, at this point I am just letting them pile up and not even attempting to write any. Spring Break starts on Friday for me and goes through next week. Eleanor will still be in school because her spring break is not until April, so I plan to get as many reviews done as I can while she is at school. March might be my busiest month ever.

  4. Oh my, you have my sympathies with so many reviews backing up. If we've read any of the same books, you can pinch my reviews but we don't often cross over :-/
It's good that your TBR is tumbling though :-)

    1. Thank you - and if that ever did happen where we by chance read the same book, I would 100% say, "Go read Stephanie Jane's review because she said the things I was thinking, but better".

I will be spending all of break cranking out reviews and working on my own book, so I hope it will be busy and productive and relaxing.
