Stacking the Shelves #32

Stacking the Shelves is a weekly feature co-hosted by Tynga's Reviews and Reading Reality. It is a chance to showcase all the goodies you've collected throughout the week, whether they're bought on-line or in-store, an ARC or a final copy, borrowed from a friend or the library, physical or digital, etc. Never has my addiction been more obvious than when I am now keeping track of every single book I acquire.

I haven't done one of these since August, mainly because I have banned myself from accumulating too many books - library or otherwise. I just have too many sitting here to read and there has to be some way to end the madness.

BUT...today I stopped at the library to pick-up my hold - The Hate U Give (YA, I know right?!) - and found a couple others in the new releases section. One was on my TBR already and three are new additions. I know, I know, I'm supposed to be Tackling the TBR, not helping it grow.

The books I ordered for my birthday thanks to the gift card from Momma have also arrived, hooray! Two I have already read, and one I have been dying to read FOR-EV-ER.

What did you add to your stash this week?

Happy Reading!

  1. The Templars! I wonder if that's any good? :):)

Enemies of the State looks like an interesting read.

    1. Oh you know, The Templars was okay... ;)

I started the Enemies one but ditched it already. Very very rough start and just couldn't get into it. Others may still like it though, so don't pass on it just because of me!

  2. Just one this week - I *know*:

Weaponized Lies - How to Think Critically in the Post-Truth Era by Daniel Levitin.

Oh, I have a copy of 'The Hate U Give' too..... [grin]

    1. I read The Hate U Give in one sitting, just a couple hours. It was so hard, especially reading the names at the end of the unarmed men and women who have been police victims. Then I think of my own students, in a predominantly African_American school, where my specific program of Behavior Skills is also made up largely of African-Americans boys, it just breaks my heart and makes me so worried for them once they leave elementary school. When these shootings really started gaining national attention with Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, my paraprofessionals and I talked at length with our students about how to act if stopped by the police: no quick movements, always show your hands, shut your mouth and only speak when they ask you questions, yes ma'am yes sir no ma'am no sir, do what you're told, don't talk back, DON'T GIVE THEM A REASON. We've drilled this into their head, but then Philando Castile was murdered after literally doing everything he was asked (how are you supposed to keep your hands on the steering wheel and get your license at the same time?) and we didn't know what to tell them anymore.

  3. The subtitle on that "radical right" one doesn't make a lick of sense..."From For to Trump"? From Ford? Will be interested in the revolting prostitutes. I've tried to find a good history of that subject, but it's so..er, "interesting" that more serious takes on it are hard to find.

    1. It says "From FDR to Trump".

I already finished Revolting Prostitutes, and it was a really excellent read. Talked a lot about how different models look in various parts of the world and stressed the major difference between legalization and decriminalization. When I was in Amsterdam in 2010 my cousin and I went on a tour of the Red Light District and for a while I thought that was the best model to allow sex workers safety to work. But after this book, I think decriminalization may be the better route than legalization. Definitely give it a read.

  4. Only books I've bought this week have been "The Skeptic's Guide to the Universe" (Audible credit) and "Heavens on Earth" by Michael Shermer.

    1. Not bad. Looks like all of us are sort of trying to not add too many books to our collections - this week anyway.

    1. Thank you! Chuckles and I are on the TBR thing, but sometimes I feel like there will never be anything close to resembling a manageable pile!

    1. Thank you! Some were great, some were duds, but you know there is no going wrong with Dan Jones ;)

    1. I read it in just a few hours because I could not put it down. My review is already up also, if you want to take a look. It was so personal to me, because of my student population, that I just could not stop reading or crying.
