"The demon appears out of no where."

I must say, I was pleasantly surprised when I decided to dive into Slayer, then Chosen. I had very, very low expectations. Buffy the Vampire Slayer is one of my favorite shows of all-time, and it among one of the greatest shows ever, period. I have missed it so desperately, yet I refuse to read the comics because I do not want comics. I want live action. I want Giles and Willow and Oz and Xander. And Angel. Always, of course, Angel. And I guess Buffy too, though she is not even my fave character.

I found I need not hold onto that caution very long. I think one of the reasons I liked the books as well as I did is because White told a completely new story, with appearances by (dreams and/or flashbacks) and references to the people and demons I loved so much for seven years of Buffy, overlapping with five years of Angel, and infinitely since then in reruns and DVD binges. It was a totally unexplored area, what happened after the Watchers Council was destroyed by The First. I wish Eleanor was old enough to watch the show already *sigh*.

Leave a comment and let me know what you think.

Happy Reading,
Sarah

  1. That is a great first line! I really want to read this series and have Slayer on my shelf. I have only read a couple of episodes of Buffy though. I hope it will still work for me.

    1. I feel like it is pretty timeless. The themes are all still relevant and monsters are real - just harder to see because they are human. I want to know what you think when you get a chance to read them!

    1. And it is not even a demon she is fighting - in the classical sense - which makes it all the better. I do like the covers quite a bit.

    1. I LOVE ORAL HISTORIES!! Who is the author? Is it new? I loved Angel, though I had a really hard time with the Angel- Cordelia thing, it was wrong wrong wrong. I liked snarky and shallow Cordelia because she was fun to hate and Charisma Carpenter played the character so well. Go back and watch Buffy, I promise it is amazing. Please overlook the ambiance of the first season; why are first seasons of shows always so dark, like literally darker than the following seasons? I noticed that on House, Scrubs, and Buffy, just to name a few. Could they not afford full lighting on set at that point?!

  6. Some fiction from me for a change:

"The two men's voices carried down the tunnels with a reverberation that made them indistinguishable but, even so, gave the impression of a business meeting. Which it was. In a way."

The Death Maze by Ariana Franklin

  9. I miss Buffy too! Buffy and Charmed were my TV loves throughout my teens and I wish there were shows like it on the TV now... Even when they try to capture those vibes it's just not the same. :(

I have Slayer on my TBR. I need to get around to reading it soon.

    1. I agree, it is very different now. The WB had a great line-up for many years. I was never as in to Charmed as I was Buffy and Dawson's Creek, but I caught a few episodes. People always tell me I will love Supernatural because I loved Buffy and I am like, "No, it is not the 'supernatural' part that makes people love Buffy, it is something else entirely." That doesn't mean Supernatural is not a good show, but they are definitely not in the same vein.

I really was surprised with how much I liked Slayer and Chosen. Hurry and read them so we can talk about them!!

  10. Happy Saturday! Today I'm sharing the first lines from When I Close My Eyes by Elizabeth Musser: "The lady come out of the bookstore -- it was all decorated for Halloween, all sizes and colors of pumpkins making faces at me from where I watched across Haywood Street in downtown Asheville."
