Well Of Course...

Heyo, so I got vaccinated yesterday and today I feel like death. I had all these grand plans for being on spring break this week, with updates, new reviews, etc. Instead, I am just going to lay in bed until I feel better.

That being said, I would 100% without a doubt get vaccinated again if I had to do it over, even knowing how shitty I would feel from the side effects. I'd rather feel crappy for a couple days than end up hospitalized with Covid, on a ventilator. It is not worth the risk to Eleanor. There are too many unknowns for long-term impacts of Covid on kids and I am not taking any chances.

I feel like I have the flu - the actual flu, complete with headaches, chills, nausea, full body aches, dizziness, and fever. Every muscle hurts - except for my calves, for some odd reason.

Even so, pleasepleaseplease, get vaccinated as soon as you can.

If you have gotten a vaccine already, how are you feeling? If you have had Covid, then also been vaccinated recently, how do the two compare, symptom/side effect-wise?

Happy Reading,
Sarah

  1. Firstly - Feel better SOON. I imagine/hope that things should right themselves in a day or so as your body adapts to the vaccine. Which one was it BTW?

My Mum is getting her 2nd vaccine this week. My brother had his first dose last week and I'm getting mine tomorrow. I'll let you know how that goes!

    1. I woke up yesterday without the headache and felt SO much better. Still had some body aches and such, so I stayed in bed to rest up and conserve energy and by dinner time last night was back to 100% I feel great today and am glad I will be able to accomplish what I set out to for spring break!

I had the Johnson and Johnson dose, so only one shot for me, thank goodness! I hate needles and it is always super hard for me to deal with blood draws, shots, etc.

    2. Mine was the AstraZeneca (Part 1). The process was a bit weird because it happened in a pharmacy in a mostly closed down Mall. Some burnt out cars, armed guards and signs saying 'Looters Will Be Shot' would not looked out of place! My 2nd shot is in May but by then most of the restrictions will be history and (most importantly) BOOK Shops will be open again!

    3. How completely creepy and weird! I would have felt like I was walking into a zombie movie and maybe reconsidered the shot, lol.

The AstraZeneca one is not available here, so I don't know as much about it. Why are the shots spread out so far? How effective is one dose vs two, is it more effective than the others I wonder and that's why it is spread out?

Hooray for bookshops being open, I could not survive without those and the library.

    4. Yup - it did feel rather zombie apocalypse, but then again I've felt like that on and off for 12 months..... [grin]

The vaccination regime is two shots 4-12 weeks apart. The first shot gives you around 80% protection with the second boosting it to 90-ish% I think. The government decided that they'd go the whole 12 weeks so to get as many people the first shot as possible before going to number two. It does make a kind of sense....

    5. That makes sense then, if you're only going from an 80% efficacy to a 90% efficacy. Best to get as many as possible the first round. So many doses have been thrown out already here, due to people not showing up to appointments, or terrible weather that knocks out power, etc. It's awful. I am glad there is a one-shot dose available, just wish there was more of it to go around!

    6. I know here that they've been almost dragging people in off the street if any of the doses are approaching their trash bin stage. Naturally some people have gotten into trouble for 'jumping the Q'. As if throwing the stuff away was the better option!

    7. RIGHT?!?! A few weeks ago, maybe two months now even, there was a bad snow storm and cars were backed up on a highway. Nurses had doses of one of the vaccines that were going to go bad, because they were out and traffic was stuck. They began walking through the storm, offering vaccines to anyone who wanted them. It would be such a pain to coordinate to get those same people in for their next dose, but I think the effort would definitely be worth it so that they would not have to be thrown away!

  2. we've gotten the first Moderna... i'm sure it will make you feel better to know that neither of us noticed very much at all in the way of reaction (sorry, i couldn't resist, lol... sincerely, i hope you feel better quick...)

    1. I woke up yesterday without a headache for the first time in 28 hours, it was wonderful! It seems like the side effects are mainly impacting my age group and under, and older people who are getting the vaccines are not having all the reactions - that has been the pattern at least, among my friends and I vs. our parents. Hope you have no side effects!

  3. I'm so sorry you are suffering side effects, but I agree it is worth it. My only side effect from my two shots (Pfizer) was a sore arm for a couple of days. With the second shot, my arm was actually swollen and felt hot for a couple of days, but it soon abated.

    1. SO worth it! I'd take the 28 hours of feeling like crap all over again if it meant keeping Eleanor safe, and just not getting Covid in general. I was headache-free as of yesterday morning. The only thing still going on is pain in my right arm, that corresponds to where the shot was in my left arm. SO WEIRD!

  4. I hope you feel better soon! My mom is fully vaccinated. The only side effect she had was a sore arm. I’m going to get vaccinated as soon as I’m allowed.

    1. So glad she did not have major side effects. From my friends' and mine reactions, compared to our parents, it seems like we are the ones having reactions and they are seeing far less in terms of major side effects, so that is good. I don't want my grandparents laid up feeling like garbage. The only impact I am having now is that I have some pain in my right arm, that corresponds to where I got the shot in my left arm. Like sympathy pains or something - the right arm feels bad for the left, I guess, lol.

  5. It should subside by the end of the day, or at least tomorrow. Sorry you are suffering but as you say, what is the alternative? I only had a brief bout of chills and foggy brain the day after my second shot, so I was fortunate. Someone someday will probably do a study on why we react differently, though I have heard that younger people have more trouble than us old folks.

    1. That is exactly what I have seen playing out so far, my age group and younger seem to be getting worse side effects than our parents and grandparents. I am fine with that however, I don't want my grandparents to be laid up feeling so awful like I was. I woke up yesterday without a headache for the first time in 28 hours and would gladly be miserable for those same 28 hours again if it means doing everything I can to keep Eleanor safe. The only lingering effect I have is pain in my right arm, that corresponds to where the shot was in my left arm. Sympathy pain maybe? lol

    2. I am glad to know you made it through. Sympathy pain?! I thought I was the only one who got those. I believe those mean the two sides of the body are in good touch and that is a healthy thing. Kind of an acupuncture type thing.

    3. Nope, not just you! It's cool though, right? One part of the body expressing solidarity with the other by causing me pain, lol. It was a rough 28 hours, but I am so glad I got the vaccine and would do it again in a heart beat.

  6. I hope you feel better soon!

It will be a while before Canada had vaccines for younger, lower-risk people like me, but my relatives who have had it have reported that the day after the vaccine was the worst for their side effects.

May you follow the same trajectory. :)

    1. Thanks so much Lydia! I woke up yesterday without a headache for the first time in 28 hours and by dinner time was 100% myself again - or 99% at least. The only lingering effect I have is pain in my right arm in the same place that I received the shot in my left arm. Perhaps my right arm feels bad for my left arm, and it is sympathy pain? lol

I am lucky to have received my shot now; teachers were given the option by our district to get it and I would do those 28 hours over again in a heartbeat if it means protecting Eleanor as much as I can.

  7. So sorry to hear you have all those side-effects. But my son said to me the side-effects are nothing compared to the side-effects of Corona. And he is right. We are not on the list, yet, but if they came to us today, we'd take the vaccination with no hesitation.

I'm sending my best wishes. Hope you'll feel better soon!!!

    1. Absolutely he is right! And the effects we are seeing in children, with the multi-system organ failure in some, that is a road I do everything in my power to avoid for Eleanor. I would 100% relive those 28 hours of misery if it means being vaccinated and keeping Eleanor as safe as possible. Based on the reactions of my friends vs those our parents' and grandparents' ages, it seems like we are having the worst of the side effects and those older than us are not so that is a definite plus as well. I don't want my mom or grandparents laid up feeling awful like I was!

  8. I had the actual bug, so I'm not bothering with the vaccine. Even if I hadn't had it, I would be dubious about a rush-job product. That's not just reckless ol' me talking, either: one of my coworkers, who is as paranoid about covid as one can ask for, isn't planning on taking it until she knows it's safe. Even though her elderly parents have already been stuck she's still waiting. Both she and her husband are very health-conscious, into whole foods and all that. Your vaccine experience is considerably worse than my covid experience -- all I had was a three-day cold and a week of general tiredness.

    1. Half a million weren't so lucky as you, so I was in no way taking any chances that I could pass it to my mom, or grandparents, or Eleanor - it's a hard no from me on the potential for multi-system organ failure that has been occurring in children who 'recover' from Covid. Having several friends in the medical field also put away any doubts I had about taking it. Plus, I know too many once-healthy/health-conscious adults who now have lingering effects of their mild and moderate bouts of Covid. I would definitely take 28 hours worth of side effects again if it means keeping Eleanor safe.

    2. I have no confidence in their estimates or their advice, but everyone has to do what they think is best for their and their kid's health.

  9. I’m so to hear you felt unwell but I’m happy you’ve had the vaccine. My parents , mother in law and husband have had their vaccines. My husband and mother in law complained about a sore arm but I’ve heard people say they’ve felt like they’ve had the flu. It’s a small price to pay for getting our lives back to normal and keeping our families safe.

    1. I am happy too and I would not change those 28 hours for anything and I'd absolutely get vaccinated again in a heartbeat. I can't imagine not doing everything in my own power to keep myself and those around me safe. More and more, as mentioned in previous comments above, it is seeming like younger (youngish, I am 38) people are having stronger side effects than those in the 60+ range. Not sure where you fall, so don't know if that is a comfort or a worry for you but either way, worth it. My right arm was having some sympathy pains for a while I think; even after all the flu-like symptoms were gone, I had pain in my right arm that corresponded to the place in my left arm where I got the shot. All is well now, and has been since Monday morning, thank goodness. Hope you are able to get your shot soon!

  10. Yikes!
I am getting my second dose of the Pfizer shot next week and I dread the side effects. But like you said, I would not change anything. I would continue to get vaccinated and I too encourage everyone to do so.

    1. I have not heard much about Pfizer here, so far Moderna and Johnson&Johnson are really what is available to the public. Pfizer has mainly been available only at the VAs, so I don't really know much about the side effects from that one. One friend of mine got the Pfizer one because she is a veteran and she said she felt kind of achy but she took a nap and felt much better. Hopefully you don't have any side effects!
