Excuse Me While I Brag...

Isn't it so pretty? And it is ALL MINE!

A couple days ago on his Facebook page Dan Jones posted that Essex Dogs was available on NetGalley.

I thought, "FINALLY!" and went to request it.

Silly me, it is on the UK site but not the US one.

I told Dan this on the post in a reply to his post...

...And now I have a digital copy of my very own!

(I did already pre-order it anyway, but I am not patient and want to read it NOW.)

I know you're thinking, "But Sarah! It's HISTORICAL FICTION! You HATE that nonsense!"

That's true.

However, I heart Dan Jones more, and I trust that he will be as authentic in his portrayal of these lives and events as he is thorough in his research and writing of his non-fiction texts.

Happy Reading!
Sarah

  1. Yay! That's awesome! I used to think I hated historical fiction, when in reality I hate the way certain authors write historical fiction :)

    1. For me it is because I mainly read non-fiction - especially about the Tudors and Plantagenets. Any historical fiction about them sends me into an absolute tizzy because Philippa Gregory, Alison Weir, etc. are constantly spewing nonsense. And Weir should know better, because she is also a "historian", though she stopped citing sources long ago, and we are just supposed to take her word for it now. I don't have a problem with historical fiction in general when it is not based on real people, if that makes sense.

    1. Nope, just went to spam. The funny part is, THIS comment did not. How does one comment go to spam and the other doesn't, when you are commenting on the same post BOTH times??

    2. There is only ONE explanation.... Blame the DEMOCRATS.... [rotflmao]

    3. Lol, right?! Everything is the fault of Democrats and has nothing to do with the fact that half of the US is certifiably insane and has had a total break from reality!

    4. Right, lol, he didn't inherit a total fucking mess that the GOP is actively working to keep messy. They'll never learn, but now it's dangerous because people who still do listen to him, Cruz, Gaetz, and the rest of the clown car genuinely do not give a shit about keeping our country functioning.

    5. It's ridiculous. But he fell off his bike too so let's make fun of that...

    6. Exactly, like no one has ever fallen off their bike ever. I mean, I am not a Biden supporter by any means but come on, it's ridiculous. He's not an incapacitated invalid being held hostage, and Faux always makes it seem like he's being spoon fed baby food and can't functiona anymore.

    1. Thank you!! He emailed me a PDF that I am not allowed to show anyone else. That's a pretty big level of trust!! Also, I heart Dan Jones and the book is great so far.

  5. I love when an author hooks up a fan haha. Patricia Cornwell did the same thing for me last year when my request to read her latest was denied. I hope this one is a hit!

    1. RIGHT?!?! He's done this a couple times with books on the US NetGalley site. I was either declined, or the request just sat for weeks. Both times he asked the publisher to get me a copy. This time he emailed it to me himself and I am not allowed to show anyone else. Obviously I am extra special about that, lol

  6. There are a couple of writers who are very good with their research and do fantastic historic fiction. I haven't heard of Dan Jones. Or maybe I have and it just didn't click. But I'll definitely have a look. Thanks, Sarah.

    1. No problem! This is his first work of fiction, everything else is about Medieval England and the Plantagenets.

I typically don't like historical fiction because the real people and places are so much more interesting to me. I especially don't like it when it is written about real people (my area of irritation falls directly in line with those who write Tudor and Plantagenet fiction, which is almost always absolute garbage). I feel like it is especially harmful when someone who is a so-called historian (cough*Alison Weir*cough) writes really ridiculous stuff in her fiction, and no longer feels like she has to cite her sources in her non-fiction.

    2. I've seen his other works now and put some of them on my wishlist. I have read more about Tudor times (including both non-fiction and non-fiction by Alison Weir and I did notice that it wasn't all based on reality, couldn't be but I still like her writings). I totally understand your frustration.

    3. I hope you like his work, you'll have to let me know what you pick up! The first book of his I read was The Plantagenets: The Warrior Kings and Queens Who Made England, while I was eight months pregnant with Eleanor. That's where I met Eleanor of Aquitaine and decided on the name. I've really enjoyed all of his books, but that one is extra special to me. I mean, he pretty much named my baby, lol.

    4. Ah, that sounds wonderful. I am just in the middle of another book you talked about, "The Pie Lady of Winthrop". But I have put Dan Jones on my wishlist.
