  1. Erm.... You're reading historical FICTION? OK, I realise it's by Dan, but still... Historical FICTION? [rotflmao] But Cool.... I hope you enjoy it, which you will - obviously!

Anyway.... Funny story.... I wasn't intending buying many books this week. OK, I had a few on order (both arrived today) but that was about it really. Then my hit&miss bookshop had an offer - 5 crime novels for £7.50. Can't turn that down, right? Then yesterday I went with a friend to see Jurassic World: Dominion @ the Multiplex which is right next to the Mall... and I had an hour to kill before he arrived so.... But LONG story short.... 15 books this week. Although MOST of them won't interest you (probably).

    Fiction:

The Necropolis Railway by Andrew Martin
1066 Turned Upside Down by Various
Standing in Another Mans Grave by Ian Rankin
Saints of the Shadow Bible by Ian Rankin
Even Dogs in the Wild by Ian Rankin
Rather Be the Devil by Ian Rankin
In a House of Lies by Ian Rankin
The Island of Missing Trees by Elif Shafak
The City of Tears by Kate Mosse

    Non-Fiction:

Aftermath - Life in the Fallout of the Third Reich by Harald Jahner
Borderland - A Journey Through the History of Ukraine by Anna Reid
Pravda Ha Ha - Truth, Lies and the End of Europe by Rory MacLean
The Shortest History of China by Linda Jaivin
Thebes - The Forgotten City of Ancient Greece by Paul Cartledge
Barbarossa Through German Eyes - The Biggest Invasion in History by Jonathan Trigg

So.... DEFINITELY no more books this month. Definitely....

  2. I KNOW!!! And not only is it historical fiction, it is book one in a TRILOGY! I truly am the luckiest girl in the world that he knows I am slightly crazy but does not think I am so crazy that he should cut off all communication, lol. He posted on his Facebook page that the ARC was on NetGalley. I was psyched because I have been checking every single day for weeks. Unfortunately it is not on the US site, and I told him so on the post. He sent me a PDF by email and NOW IT IS ALL MINE!!!!!!!! It's really good, you should give it a try. I don't know when it is out in the UK; US publication is in February.

Now, let's discuss this mess you've left me that you most certainly should not be adding to for the rest of the month...

I've added, Aftermath, Borderland and Thebes to my sub-TBR and will shortly be checking the library for them!

    1. Three? Three isn't bad.... Well, not THAT bad... Not REALLY bad..... AND no more for the rest of the month.... Except anything you might pick up from my review posts.... So, pretty good really!

BTW - Essex Dogs is out in Hardback & Kindle here on 15th September 2022.

    2. The month is almost over! That statement would be far more comforting if it was the first week of June, lol.

I also requested a couple books from the library that are on my "CK sub-TBR" list - Nazi Billionaires, Dark Queens, a few others.

I wish books were published at the same time in the US and UK. And that we had the same covers. The UK covers for his books are almost always better than the US ones - though I would say that is also true in general. But the problem for me is, since it is my BFF Dan Jones, I need BOTH covers.

    3. I simply don't 'get' the whole thing about having different publishing dates, covers and (too often!) titles between the US and UK. Agree on UK covers though - generally more interesting and (much) more relevant to the content of the book. Is it that UK publishers treat people like intelligent adults and US publishers don't so much? It seems like that sometimes - almost as if US publishers don't expect US readers to understand images and text that we over here take for granted.

    4. I honestly don't know what it is with the covers and titles, except that it is a different publisher in the US, so maybe something with contracts allows them to change covers/titles? But the big question is why, and my answer is: there is no good reason. It's just so weird. I suppose that could have something to do with the different publishing dates then as well. I still don't understand it though, because it is not as though the book needs to be translated before being published here. It's weird and stupid, and the reason why I have doubles of many of Dan's books. More for him to sign then, right?? lol

    1. So far, so good. I am especially loving Essex Dogs. But I love Dan Jones, so that was kind of ano-brainer for me. Happy Reading!

  6. Jones? Saying that in my best Belloq voice.

I still have to read the last one you recommended me (his Middle Ages one, which I admit I'm looking forward to getting started on)...

    1. DUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUDE. Yes! Start with "The Plantagenets: The Warrior Kings and Queens Who Made England". It's where I met Eleanor of Aquitaine; thus, Dan Jones named my baby. He was amused when I absurdly blurted that out when we met at a reading/book signing, lol

  7. Four books without spending a cent. I'm impressed. Wish I could say the same, but only two of my books were free this week.

    1. I don't typically buy books, to be honest. Since I mostly read non-fiction, the odds of me re-reading are quite low. The only authors I buy without question/books unread are Dan Jones and Karen McManus. Otherwise, it all comes from the library.

    1. Have you read "The Babysitter: My Summers with a Serial Killer" by Liza Rodman? It was the first I learned of Tony Costa, I read it last fall. If Helltown is of interest to you, then that one will be too!

    1. I think you'll like it. If you're interested in Tony Costa, you should also read "The Babysitter: My Summers with a Serial Killer" by Liza Rodman; I read it last fall and really liked it. I can't even imagine what it would feel like to find out your babysitter who you adore is also a serial killer.
