Top Ten Tuesday: Halloween Freebie

Welcome to another Top Ten Tuesday, hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl.

This week is a Halloween freebie so I'm going to show off some of my most favorite spooky reads. Not anything fiction of course, because real life is always scarier. I am an avid reader of paranormal experiences, and have had several experiences myself at a few different locations - The Villisca Ax Murder House, The Stanley Hotel, The Palmer House Hotel, my former apartment in college...the list goes on. I really find it interesting how other teams or individuals investigate - especially when they are at locations I have been to, or locations I would love to explore for myself. These are in no particular order, but are simply titles that I found to be most spine-chilling. I rated all of them four stars or above.

Do you like reading about the paranormal? Have you ever had any experiences yourself? Let me know!

Happy Reading!

  1. I haven't read any of these, but you're right, real life can sometimes be scarier than fiction!

    1. Oh, I can definitely be a 'fraidy cat sometimes. And I don't ever go anywhere to investigate where there are aggressive or dangerous entities. I would never want to inadvertently bring something home with me that could endanger Eleanor.

  4. Wow, I don't think I'd ever have the guts to read any of these book even though some of the covers and titles really make me wish I was brave enough to 😅

    1. If you are interested, you could try the one about the spirits of the Old West. Nothing there was aggressive or angry or dangerous. Definitely stay away from the Haverfordwest one, it was suuuuuuper aggressive and even spooked me.

  5. I'd probably be a bit too scared to read any of these! However I do like to watch paranormal shows like Most Haunted and Ghost Adventures. :-)

    1. I loved Most Haunted, even when it was silly and everyone screamed and got scared. I am more partial to Ghost Hunters over Ghost Adventures, but I do enjoy the shows. I especially like getting the history of the places they investigate.

  7. Ooooh... I love the idea of nonfiction! I think I need to pick up Speaking with the Spirits of the Old Southwest, since I live in the SW US. Having visited Tombstone, AZ several years ago, I'm even more intrigued.

Here is our Top Ten Tuesday. Thank you!

    1. Non-fiction is pretty much all I read. I enjoyed that book, though I am skeptical of the dowsing rod thing and I do not put much stock in it. Still, the places they investigated were really interesting and especially if you live in the area, you'd find it to be worthwhile I think.

  8. I am not super huge on the scary things, but some of these sound good! And I do love me some Halloween, so I will have to check some of them out :)

    1. Definitely a 1. I believe it was the spirit of a young child, even as young as a toddler. We called him/er Ghost Baby, because Ghost Toddler sounded weird. Not scary at all, just curious mostly - though items did get moved around a bit.

    1. Fox Hollow is crazy! You could not pay me enough money in the world to stay in the guest apartment. No way.

  11. You must be somewhat an expert if you have read so much and had your own experiences. I have had a couple experiences with ghosts and a few more with what I call fairies but I don't really know what they are. My best friend's husband is a UFO investigator so now the interplanetary enters! I admire your dedication to nonfiction. I am pondering your statement that real life is scarier than fiction.

    1. Oh gosh, there is so much I don't know - especially the science behind it all. But I know what I have seen and heard and taken photos of, and I do truly believe that there are spirits among us all the time. I want to hear your stories!! I have never given much thought to UFOs, but I do think we would be extremely arrogant if we believed that we are the only intelligent beings in an infinite universe!

  13. I’ve never had a paranormal experience, but I do like reading about them. When I was a kid, one of my favorite books was a book of western US folktales about ghosts and other creepy things. I want to read Josh Gates’s book. He’s hilarious.

    1. I LOVE Josh Gates!! He cracks me up all the time. Destination Truth is one of my favorite shows. I was always most interested in the paranormal places he and his team went, though the creatures they looked for, like the mermaid and stuff, were kind of interesting to me also.

  14. I'm not really into real life paranormal. I like my ghosts strictly fictional.

    1. It was odd, getting used to it, but I ended up living there for five years. It was really hard to leave him or her behind, truthfully. I believe the spirit was a young child. We called him/her Ghost Baby, though I'd guess the spirit was toddler-age. One night I was laying on the couch watching Die Hard and I heard a little voice say, "Hi." I paused the movie and sat up, looking around. I looked out the window (I was on the second floor) but no one was outside, and my windows had been closed even. It was around 10 PM. I went out into the hall, but no one was there either. It was a very small building, only 11 apartments, and I was one of the youngest tenants so there were not kids living there. From that point on, things would be moved around sometimes, and I can not count the number of times I heard that pitter-patter of little feet running across the linoleum in the kitchen. The kicker was, after returning from home over Christmas break, my GPS was sitting on the end table. The battery was dead because it had not been plugged in for a couple weeks. It turned on by itself and announced it was searching for AmTrack service in Leavenworth, Kansas. I have never been there in my life, nor have I ever searched for train services, so there is no way it was some kind of fluke searching based off of my previous locations.

  16. I love reading paranormal books. I think I get that from my dad--he has this curiosity for the unknown and unseen that just sort of carried over to me, you know? All of these sound so intriguing. I'm definitely looking into some!

    1. I am glad to provide some books of interest for you. I too am so curious about the unknown - but mainly paranormal. I do not have much interest in other things of this nature - aliens, Big Foot, etc. There's just something about ghosts/spirits that I am drawn to.
