Top Ten Tuesday #36: Short Stories/Novellas

Welcome to another Top Ten Tuesday, now hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl.

This week's topic is "Favorite Novellas/Short Stories". A few weeks back there was a TTT about a favorite series and I finally let the world know that there is actually one cozy mystery series I do read and am desperately longing for the next installment. In addition to the full-length books, the Mercy Watts series (Goodreads link) includes a couple of shorts that are pretty decent and sort-of helped with a quick book-boyfriend fix, because I love Chuck and who doesn't love a hot detective? (Another example: Detective Stabler, anyone? Christopher Meloni, yum.) So, even though I included the shorts in that post a few weeks ago, here they are again...plus another gem I really like.

Happy Reading!

    1. Thanks Chrissi. If you are ever in the mood for a fun, easy read - though the crime aspect will make you think (most of the time), I definitely recommend these!

  2. I don't read cozy mysteries but these are great covers!

    1. They really are! I have noticed so many more details in looking at them in color on my laptop vs black and white on my Kindle. They incorporate some interesting aspects of the plot. And these are pretty much the only cozy mysteries I read, so many of them weer silly crimes that somehow always happened near a woman who liked to bake or owned a bakery. Seriously.

  3. These look fun. I read a short story set in the world of a favorite cozy series a while back, and it was fun to get a quick snippet with familiar characters. I read a lot more novellas/ short stories than I ever did before blogging...

    1. And I hardly read any at all! But I do like these and that is why I am hoping the author will do some short to hold me over until the next book is released. A while back she said she was in the middle of researching for the next novel, but I need something to read until then!!

    1. It is a fun series and Mercy doesn't take crap from anyone - except her dad. I have enjoyed the series so far in that the crimes/mysteries were not something easy to solve.

  5. I haven't read any of those, but I do remember you talking about the Mercy Watts stories a few weeks ago (the covers are very distinctive).

My TTT was a little different this week: http://www.brookereviewsnsweeps.com/2018/07/favorite-fanfiction-stories/#comment-279

    1. Aren't they?? Prior to that post a few weeks back, I had really only ever seen the covers in black and white on my Kindle, but once I took a look at them in color, I realized how many little aspects of the plot were incorporated into them. Kind of silly it took me that long to take a look at the covers in color, haha

  6. I haven't read any of them yet, but I did add the Mercy Watts series to my TBR the last time you mentioned them!

Here is our Top Ten Tuesday. Thank you!

    1. Yay, I am glad you added them! Book 1 is not nearly as bad as I made it out to be, once I got further into the series. I was just so annoyed at how little was accurate when it came to Lincoln, Nebraska, and the University. I mean, I went there. Twice. (Bachelor's and Master's.) I did not take kindly to it being misrepresented, no matter how inconsequential it was to the story. it is not completely necessary to read them in order, but I would still recommend it, especially as you get into books 4 and beyond. Things carry over, not necessarily from crime to crime, but it will make much more sense all around if you do go in order. Let me know what you think of them once you get to read any!

    1. Right?! The 'unique' thing about this female PI (besides the fact that she is not actually a PI, she became a nurse even though her dad is a well-known retired police detective and runs his own firm but her dad always drags her into his cases), is that she and her mom look a lot like Marilyn Monroe and it is forever both a help and hindrance to Mercy.

    1. They are pretty neat. The thing that sets Mercy out is that both she and her mom look like Marilyn Monroe, and it is forever both a help and hindrance to Mercy when she is working on a case. She gets herself into some pretty amusing situations.

  9. I haven’t read any of those. I love the matching covers, though.

    1. I think they're pretty neat. It was not until a few weeks ago when I posted about the whole series that I really took a good look at the covers in color for the first time - they'd only been in black and white on my Kindle. I realized how many little aspects of the plot are included. It is a fun series.
