Books From The Backlog #55

Books from the Backlog, hosted by Carole's Random Life in Books, is a fun way to feature some of those neglected books sitting on your shelf unread.

I am featuring books in the order that they were added to my Goodreads To-Read shelf, so sometimes there will be a couple weeks in a row of books on the same topic.

Why did I add The Mistresses of Henry VIII to my TBR?

Because I'm curious to see how many mistresses and illegitimate children this author is going to propose that Henry had. I have read some pretty outlandish claims backed up by little-to-no evidence and wonder what I will find here.

Have you read this book, or is it somewhere on your TBR? If you've read it, would you recommend it to others?

Happy Reading!
Sarah

  1. Haha! That's as good a reason as any. I confess that sometimes I read a book to discover how outlandish it cam be, too.

    1. Despite what The Tudors/HBO would have people believe, I don't think Henry had nearly as many mistresses as some researchers claim - and children as well. He was willing to raise up one illegitimate son, Henry Fitzroy, why would he not have done so for the others supposedly out there when Fitzroy died? Some of those claims just don't make sense!

  2. I haven't read this one. I seem to fall in and out of love with this time period and these historical figures. Great cover on this book. Thanks for sharing.

    1. I find that I do have my moments where I am OVER the Tudors. But I always come back - they are really what got me reading again before and after my daughter was born. But then I met the Plantagenets and WOW.

  4. Oh man, I used to devour books, documentaries, and movies based on Henry the VIII. This one would be fascinating to read.

Btw, I like the idea of Books of the Backlog. I really need to give attention to the massive amount of books on my shelves. I may have to join next week. :)

    1. Yes! Join us! I was going to start with books sitting on my shelves, but I decided to go waaaaaay back and literally started with the first book I ever marked 'to-read' on Goodreads and am posting that way. Some I own, some I don't, but at least they are no longer forgotten!

  5. Six wives wasn't enough for ol' Harry? I know he had at least one, the woman who birthed Henry Fitzroy...

    1. I am cautiously optimistic that it will be some outlandish number and then I will mock it if the research is anything less than top-notch!
