First Line Friday #116

First Line Friday is brought to you by Hoarding Books. Playing along is easy: open the book nearest you and share the first line. Then check out the link to see the other first lines posted this week.

***You might have noticed an increase in recent weeks of books written by Black and African-American authors in a variety of genres. Since the murder of George Floyd and the spotlight once again shining on the mistreatment of our Black Brothers and Sisters, I am working on amplifying voices that often get shouted down. I have started a #BlackLivesMatter Reading List and would love any suggestions over on that page. My main contributions so far have been of non-fiction, big surprise, so I am looking for fiction especially.***

"How small I look. Laid out flat, my stomach touching ground. My right knee bent and my brand-new Nikes stained with blood."

Leave a comment and let me know what you think, and leave a link to your FLF so I can stop by to see what you've posted this week.

Happy Reading!

    1. We keep thinking we are smarter than Mother Nature and she crushes us every time.

    2. I always cringe when someone says something stupid like 'unsinkable' or 'indestructible'.... That's just ASKING for trouble! [lol]

    3. Exactly! Mother Nature has no time for silly human ambition. Look what happened to Titanic!

    1. It was a powerful story, based on what happened to Tamir Rice - though he is also mentioned in the book. The chapters alternated back and forth between the main character being alive and being dead. Very, very powerful.

  3. Yikes, yours is startling!

    1. It was a sad but powerful read, and a story we know too well - a young Black child killed by an officer who thought he had a real gun. It is a quick read also, definitely worth the time.

  4. Oh no! I can't imagine what is happening to that poor boy!

Have you read, The Hate U Give?
If you haven't, you should give it a try. I finished it a few days ago and has left me very emotional. I should be writing a review on it soon.

    1. The story is based on Tamir Rice, at least the situation resembles what happened to him, though he is mentioned in the book along with many other young Black men and boys who have been killed. The chapters alternate between the main character being alive and being dead, but he is a Ghost Boy. It's a short by powerful read.

I read The Hate U Give a couple years ago, and just finished Thomas's second book On the Come Up a couple weeks ago. THUG is my favorite but they're both incredible novels.

    Happy Friday!
On my blog I'm sharing the first lines from Start With Me by Kara Issac: https://christianfictiongirl.blog/2020/07/10/first-line-friday-143/. It's a fantastic novel! Currently I'm reading The Trouble With Love by Toni Shiloh so I'll share from there.
"If I was going on a non-date with Waldorf Emmett Bell, I wanted to look my best."
Hope you have a wonderful weekend! 😀❤📚
