This is year SEVEN of Tackling the TBR. When I started this mess I was well over 5,000 books, so to be where I am now is pretty incredible.

So, have you stopped buying books in order to reduce your pile? Because, no matter how many books I eliminate, I always add more.
ReplyDeleteI almost never buy books unless they're by very specific authors - basically just Dan Jones. I don't re-read, unless I've got a new book in a series and need to remember what happened before. I have a five-shelf bookcase full of books that I went on binges and bought a few years ago, but many came from Half Price Books, a used bookstore chain here. I will sell them back when I am done. Eleanor is the only one who gets new books, because she rereads over and over and over.
DeleteYou know my predicament. Also, in Germany you cannot buy new half price or reduced books. Books have a set price. You can only get them cheaper if they are used.

DeleteI LOVE Half Price Books so much. They mostly sell used books and I've always found books in great condition. They also sell new books, but those are not the ones I am buying. I think they're at a slight discount, but not a lot. Our bookstores that sell new books only, like Barnes and Noble, discount new releases 20% for a short time.
There's a law in Germany that doesn't allow any of that. They want to save the booksellers. And in a way, it helps. Even the big online sellers can't reduce new books here.

DeleteYes, even amazon. If you want to do business in Germany, you better stick to the German law. Walmart learned that the hard way.
Good! These massive companies can do whatever they want here and there's nothing to stop them. I'm glad other countries don't let them get away with that.

DeleteSame. I wish workers were protected here. Amazon, Wal-Mart, and Starbucks are especially terrible to their workers.
DeleteI know, it's terrible how people are treated in your country. And if they don't wake up soon, it will get a lot worse.
DeleteOh, we are awake. There's constant protesting and people are in the streets daily. It's just a lot harder to immediately mobilize a country of our size vs much smaller ones like in Europe. The No Kings protests have had major turnouts, but we need more and we need them to be disruptive. I understand the thinking of having them on weekends so more people can attend, but that's not disruptive. People have to walk out of their jobs and disrupt daily life for it to have the biggest impact possible.

DeleteThat's true. But there's also this movement of 'leaving maga' happening and it's interesting to watch. But they're also crying and saying things like, "why aren't you more welcoming" and we are like, "Well, you made this mess so you have to fix it and then we can talk". Accountability is not their strongsuit.

It must be exhausting for the rest of the world too, because he does stupid things daily. However, he has not been seen in public in like a week, so fingers crossed...

DeleteThe problem is that Vance would become president and he's capable of doing a lot of damage in the rest of the term, due to his close association with Project 2025. Unlike trump, Vance actually understands Project 2025 and will implement whatever he can. But on a positive note, trump's base doesn't really like him the way they are obsessed with trump, so he is unlikely to win an election as the presidential candidate.

DeleteBIG GROSS MESS is the right word for it. We had so many jokes over here when he even tried to rig the football championship. Like, our chancellor will call them and demand that Germany can keep on playing. ;)
Deletelol, right?!?! I was really hoping that the governing body of the world cup would move it somewhere else to show that the rest of the world thinks trump is an idiot. The only way to get his attention is to impact his bottom line, and I am sure he somehow made millions personally from the games being here.
DeleteI don't really care about soccer either way but I was super invested in our game once it was revealed that he complained and I am so freaking glad the US lost.
The trouble is: Money makes the world go around. Our politicians are all cowards.
Delete100%, and people are fed up. That's why Mamdani won the election to be NYC's mayor. Dems and Repubs should be both scared.

DeleteI'm also really tired of this "vote for the lesser of two evils and push that candidate to the left" because it NEVER works. The genocide in Palestine is a HUGE issue for so many voters here and it's being dismissed as an issue that doesn't need to be addressed right now because it does not impact us directly. It's infuriating.
DeleteMost people only wake up when it's too late, i.e. when they themselves are concerned. How about looking at what is happening in this world. Because what happens elsewhere can easily be happening here.
DeleteRight, that's when people started complaining - because gas and groceries have sky-rocketed. Never mind the fact that the Epstein files still have not been released, the president is a convicted felon and rapist, billions are going to the IDF, etc.
