I am really excited this week for a couple reasons. First, I am super close to meeting my goal of 250 books this year (Never mind that I am plowing through 'chick lit' and 'cozy mysteries' to reach it). Secondly, because I am super close to reaching my goal, I am able to get back to books I actually care about and WANT to read.
So, I am very happy that this week's First Line comes from Sarah Bryson's book about Charles Brandon, Henry VIII's BFF.
"Charles Brandon was an enigmatic, charismatic man, rising from mere boyhood friend of a future king to flirting with a European duchess, marrying the Dowager Queen of France, being created the Duke of Suffolk, and not to mention becoming the leading magnate in Lincolnshire by the end of his life."
After letting me know what your First Line is in the comments below, check out my fellow First-Liners and see what they chose this week!
Carrie - Reading is my SuperPower
Rachel - Bookworm Mama
Beth - Faithfully Bookish
Heather - Encouraging Words from the Tea Queen
Sydney - The Singing Librarian
Happy Reading!
Sarah
This looks like a really good book, and I applaud your accomplishment of reading 250 books this year! That's amazing! What is your secret to reading so much?! Sadly, I did not make my goal of 50--looks like it will be 30 books read for the year of 2016.
ReplyDeleteHere is my first line:
Waves of Mercy
by Lynn Austin
Lake Michigan
1897
"I am living my nightmare. A violent storm has overtaken our steamship, and as we mount high on the crest of a wave one moment, then plunge sickeningly into a watery trough the next, I am certain we are about to sink."
Happy reading and Happy New Year!
I am very excited to read it - Sarah is a great author. She has also written an "In a Nutshell" book about Mary Boleyn, which I highly recommend. She is working on her third book now about Mary Tudor, Charles Brandon's wife and Henry VIII's sister. I can't wait to read it!
ReplyDeleteI am 16 shy of my goal so far but am hoping to at least get within 10. I have slowed down quite a bit since focusing more on my blog and quality reviews. Basically I read when my daughter naps and goes to bed, and when she is with her father every other weekend. I am also a teacher, so I get to read A LOT in the summer!
Happy New Year!
You definitely bring the culture to our Friday fun! I enjoyed the first line I just prefer my facts in documentary form ;) I'm curious about the fiction you are suffering through! I might have to hunt you down on goodreads.
ReplyDeleteI'm currently reading Seven Brides for Seven Texans collection from Barbour. Here's the first line of the novella I just started last night, A Love Returned by Keli Gwyn.
Twelve years was a long time to wait for a tamale.
I do enjoy my non-fiction! And yes, pretty much all I watch on Netflix is documentaries :)

I used BookBub to find a bunch of FREE 'cozy mysteries' and 'chick lit', so basically I have spent the last two weeks reading about idiots who make really bad life choices. I have also been lucky to find a genuinely interesting series or two.
My world shattered last winter. A hairline crack formed, and my life perched on the edge of an abyss, set to topple at the slightest breeze. But instead of a breeze, I got a whirlwind...in the form of a positive pregnancy test. Justified by Varina Denman
ReplyDeleteHi Caryl, thank you for stopping by to hare your line with me! Happy Reading and Happy New Year!
DeleteHi Sarah,
ReplyDeleteMy first line is from Laura Frantz's new book Moonbow Night.
April 1777
What cannot be cured must be endured.
Thank you for stopping by Andie. Happy Reading!
DeleteI finished Dracula! I also finished A Christmas Carol so my first line is from a cozy mystery (as you call it hehe) by Mary Higgins Clark. I'm bit obsessed with running to her books. This one is called "Where Are You Now?" I've got my detective hat on while running and often times shout out advice to the characters, much to the surprise of the people around me. Today the book got real good, but this line stuck with me.
ReplyDeleteWithout further ado my first line is: Our children begin by loving us; as they grow up they judge us; sometimes they forgive us.
Hurrah for finishing Dracula!
DeleteI can not take credit for the 'cozy mystery' moniker though, that is how BookBub has labeled them!
I like this line that you have shared. It makes me sad and hopeful at the same time.
Then the character commented it should be the other way around - the parents feeling that way about their kids. Left me contemplating it even after I'd finished my run. Well whoever came up with it - love my cozy mysteries! :)
DeleteHmmm. I can see it both ways.
ReplyDeleteNot sure who coined it, but it exists, so...enjoy! :)
Ahhh so many books I want to read this year! I am hoping I can get to them all! This week my first line comes from The Bomber War: The Allied Air Offensive Against Nazi Germany by Robin Neillands "This is the story of a machine." I haven't started it yet, but looking forward to it!
ReplyDeleteI finished the Brandon book and highly recommend it. I should have the review up this weekend, I am hoping.
DeleteI have found that since I became a mom, I can't read a lot about WWII like I used to when I was younger. I am definitely interested in this book though, as I can stomach the battles far better than books about the Holocaust. Looking back, it amazes me I was ever able to read any of it, it is just too heartbreaking and infuriating and maddening.
I will be looking for your review when you are done and I am adding this one to my TBR on Goodreads. Happy Friday!
