Welcome to another Top Ten Tuesday, now hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. This week's topic is all about books that have been on my TBR the longest. Yikes. It is almost too scary to think about some of the books languishing there.
This beast has the honor of being the first book I added to Goodreads. It is the tome of all tomes, and will probably take me the rest of my life to read. I check it out from the library and read as much as I can in three weeks before returning it, because there is ALWAYS a hold on it. So basically, I have been reading this book for three years and am only on page 200.
I don't know how my library system can have every Feinstein book except this one, but they do and that is sad.
I may or may not ever get to this one. I don't even know if I am that interested anymore.
I have enjoyed other books by this author and plan to read this as soon as I can find it.
Still trying to find this one too. Plus, the author's name is Herwig, so that's pretty cool.
I really have no excuse with this one because I am pretty sure I bought it at Half Price Books in the last couple months. Or maybe I looked at it, and then did not buy it. Both are legit possibilities.
I actually checked this one out from the library in the last couple years but could not get into it. I feel like it had more to do with my own reading mood than the book, because the story of Jesse Owens is definitely NOT boring. Will try again soon.
No excuse for this one either. Should have read it a long time ago.
Pretty sure I bought this one in one of my spending sprees on Amberley's website in the last few months, but I can't actually remember because I bought SO MANY Elizabeth Norton books.
I think I finally snagged this one from Half Price Books. Again, not totally sure, which is a good indicator I do in fact have an addiction, since I can not even remember all the books that I buy and cram onto my shelves.
This one is on my shelf somewhere, I am almost certain. This seems to be a theme among the last few books. It is kind of sad that I can't remember what I only looked at, and what I actually bought.

DeleteI thought I'd love Under the Black Flag but I didn't? Although it might have just been me. And I was fascinated with the Trojan War as a kid, so that one might really appeal to me. :)
ReplyDeleteI think pirates are pretty neat, subject-wise at least. Not all of them could be as cool as Captain Jack of course. I am really hit or miss with the ancient world some times, but the Trojan War and helen of Troy are endlessly fascinating to me.
DeleteYeah I love pirates, and find their histories fascinating, so it kind of baffled me that I didn't get into that one more.
DeleteMaybe you were in a reading funk and didn't now it! Or it just was not the time for you to be reading it - who knows. I am a little worried to start it now because I have heard a similar statement from others about the book as well!

ReplyDeleteTotally love the Tudor books. I have a ton that are centred around that family and that period of time too.
Oh no, that was not my intention! I started with that one because it has been on my TBR the longest and I am pretty sure I will never actually finish it unless I buy it myself. It is the definite account of the period, but I also discovered once I had my baby, I could not stomach what I used to be able to read about before.
DeleteThe Tudors were my first history-love, and then I discovered the Plantagenets. Now my interest in UK history spans from the first people up through around 1603, give or take a few years. Sometimes James is interesting and sometimes he isn't. I have not yet figured out why!

ReplyDeleteI laugh at it myself! I think at some point I will have to buy the book instead of repeatedly checking it out and making minimal progress because it is already on hold for someone else a few days later. I will definitely keep track of my progress on that one - it is my Everest!

DeleteI've read the Anne Boleyn one but I can't recall much about it. I read it when I first got into the Tudors so I never knew if the facts in it were correct or not and now I can't remember anything about it!
ReplyDeleteI will be sure to write a very details review to jog your memory! I remember that feeling with some of the first books I read about the Tudors (I used to really like Alison Weir. Now I am like, um...where are your sources?) and Plantagenets. Now I feel marginally educated about them and can point out a few inaccuracies.

Did you not like the book and that is why you only read some of it? Another blogger commented that he did not really like it either, so now I am worried. Pirates are supposed to be interesting, I don't want to be bored!

The one about the Third Reich is the definitive account and one I feel like everyone should read, but shoot, it is a beast of a book! I will probably end up buying it, so I don't have to continue competing with other library patrons to get to it.
DeleteI think I've tried that Mary Tudor book -- or it may have been another one. I was just then starting to view Katherine of Aragon and her daughter in more sympathetic turns, after freeing myself a lifetime of Boleyn propaganda. ;)
ReplyDeleteThe Nazi Olympics sounds interesting...wasn't reviving the contests their idea? They had an interesting relationship with the past, wanting to build buildings that would make for good ruins, and shamelessly borrowing ancient things to give themselves power. They ruined swastikas, but happily not the Olympics.
YES! It IS Boleyn Propaganda! Catherine has always been my favorite queen and I always felt so terribly for Mary. Who knows how differently her own reign could have been had she not be subjected to such treatment during her formative years.
DeleteThe first modern Olympics was held in 1896, so I am not sure of Germany's connection but they definitely had a yen for taking things that did not belong to them!
Well, I haven't read any of this or even heard of these. But definitely this looks like an impressive list. I hope you can find some time to read these :)

DeleteI like the fact that I often go to be a kindle book and find I've already purchased it and just haven't gotten to it yet. Saves the trouble of buying it twice but it's also embarrassing! I love the last one. There must be enough Tudor and Plantaganet fiction to keep one supplied for years!

DeleteI'm not sure about Tudor fiction, but there is definitely tons and tons and tons of non-fiction to keep me busy!
I read some of 'Rise & Fall' in school for a History project. I have the Kagan book in a pile of other Greek & Roman books which I mean to get around to.... Black Flag has shown up on various searches but haven't succumbed to it yet.... The Jesse Owens book is on my Amazon Wish List after seeing the movie of his life: 'Race' which is very good.... I do have a couple of Tudor books - but none of those listed.

ReplyDeleteAudio is def a good idea. And it might be a lot faster than my snail pace! I've held off even requesting it for a while now, over two years, since I have a lot of other stuff going on with galleys and author requests and my own writing project. Some day we will both finish that book!
DeleteI read a few chapter of The Peloponnesian war in high-school, and I found it fascinating. Will definitely pick it up again at one point. Good luck with your reading!

ReplyDeleteExactly! I think the reason I've not given up on it is because it is THE definitive account of the era. I feel like I must read it, and pretty much everyone else should too. Too bad everyone here is trying to read it at the same time as I am!
