Stacking the Shelves is a weekly feature co-hosted by Tynga's Reviews and Reading Reality. It is a chance to showcase all the goodies you've collected in the last week, whether they're bought on-line or in-store, an ARC or a final copy, borrowed from a friend or the library, physical or digital, you get the idea. If nothing else, this weekly treat shows how much of an addiction I really have when it comes to acquiring my precious books.

DeleteThe blog name came about when I was setting up my blog and all the cute witty names were taken. I literally sighed and said, "Ugh, all the book blog names are taken!" out loud. And then, my blog was born. Happy Reading!

DeleteLooks like a historical week! And I'm not judging at all - these looks great! And I'm also a fan of medical history - last year I read this cool book called Quackery, you should look it up, it was awesome :) the name should suggest what it was mostly about :D

DeleteThe Turbulent Crown looks great, love that cover. and how cool that you know the author of La Reine Blanche! Hope the book does well. :) I think I'll pass on Pustules, Pain and Pestilence though- that title is all I need to know!
ReplyDeleteOh yes, Sarah has become a good friend and she has given me lots of great advice about my own projects. She has a few other titles as well that I recommend, especially her biography of Charles Brandon.
DeleteAs for the ailments of Henry VIII, it is actually pretty interesting even though I was a little worried it might be gross. It actually discusses treatment and recipes for how these things were treated in his time. It was free with Kindle Unlimited.
I bought Cracked Kingdom too! They are like...well...crack ;)

ReplyDeleteOh gosh, yes! But the series is just terrible and I know they intended it to be super dramatic but it defies even the most dramatic of soap operas. Even that weird one that was on after Days of Our Lives, with that doll Timmy that came to life.

-Verbal Judo, 2nd Edition ($1.99) -- based on a lecture I watch and re-watch. Read it within a day.
- Letters of CS Lewis, edited by Warnie Lewis and Walter Hooper. This is an updated version that un-does some of Warnie's edits of Lewis' letters...apparently Warnie decided his brother could have used better adjectives (horrible for vicious) in his private correspondence!
- How Dante Can Save Your Life, Rob Dreher. I want to save this one until I've read Purgatorio and Paradiso, but...we'll see.
Oh no! Medieval history sales...I am doomed. when did you get the email? I didn't get one. I can see I will probably be working on my Stacking the Shelves post for next week already once I start poking aroud the history section, haha.
DeleteI purchased a couple CS Lewis books within the last two months or so; The Screwtape Letters, Mere Christianity, and The Great Divorce. I started Mere Christianity but texted my pastor saying I did not think I was smart enough to read it and he said I was, I should just read it out loud to myself in my British accent and I'd be fine (I have a habit of muttering to myself with a British accent when I am working on my research, cursing the chroniclers of centuries gone by for their lack of attention to Eleanor of Aquitaine.)
Your pastor gives fun advice! The first time I read Mere Christianity, it went right over me. The second time, which was ten years later, I thought "This is amazing! Did I even READ this book the first time?"
DeleteThe books you mentioned are the three that led me to Lewis: I was intrigued by Great Divorce, but won over completely by Screwtape Letters.

I *tried* to read Mere Christianity after a work colleague gave it to me thinking that it would convert me [grin]. Needless to say it didn't. I guess studying philosophy and comparative religions at university ruined me for that sort of thing?
DeleteI had the same experience, but later on when I read it again I noticed things I'd ignored completely before. To an extent I think our expectations warp what we find in books. I don't think it's possible for one book to convert anyone to anything...the ground has to be prepared by other experience and our reflections about them.

Thanks AJ!The pustules one is free with Kindle Unlimited and was a short read, but very informative. It was interesting to see all the different ingredients used to treat different ailments - though some I knew about, like mercury and lead - Yikes!

Oh no! What part of the country do you live in? I can imagine how devastating it is, we've had some nasty experiences with tornadoes. Glad you are safe and hopefully the power will be restored ASAP.
