First Line Friday #89

First Line Friday is brought to you by Hoarding Books. Playing along is easy: open the book nearest you and share the first line. Then check out the link to see the other first lines offered up this week.

In honor of the book birthday for One of Us Is Next, which came out January 8th, I am featuring both the book that got me hooked on YA thrillers, One of Us Is Lying, AND the sequel that I am now currently sitting at 82% on. I adore Karen McManus and enjoy her work so much.

One of Us Is Lying by [McManus, Karen M.]

A sex tape. A pregnancy scare. Two cheating scandals. And that's just this week's update. If all you knew of Bayview High was Simon Kelleher's gossip app, you'd wonder how anyone found time to go to class.

  1. What an interesting YA book. I may have to check this out for my students.

    Happy Friday!
Today on my blog I am sharing the first few lines from The Blizzard Bride by Susie Dietze: https://christianfictiongirl.blog/2020/01/10/first-line-fridays-118/. I'm still working my way through this fun novel, so I will share another line or two from The Blizzard Bride.
"'Forgive, forget, forgive, forget.' The words formed a rhythmic refrain in Abby's head, in time to the beat played by the group of fiddles and banjos Saturday evening at Mayor Carpenter's birthday party."
I hope you have an excellent weekend filled with relaxing reading time. 🙂❤️📚

    1. I really liked both of them, as well as another book (unrelated to this set) called Two Can Keep a Secret. McManus always ends on a great twist and older older high schoolers would definitely like them. They're fast-paced and the action keeps moving and you are hurtling forward and don't quite know where you are going, but you know that wherever you go will be worth the read.

  4. My first line is from The Gray Chamber by Grace Hitchcock:
    New York City, Fall 1887
Edyth Foster’s limbs burned as she pedaled down Fifth Avenue, her white skirts whipping in the wind while she wove around pedestrians and carriages, ignoring their shouts of protest.

  6. Happy Friday! I’m sharing from Volition by Chautona Havig on my blog today. Here is the first line from Chapter 18:

“For a week, I read my Bible, prayed like I’d never prayed before, and tried to ignore the skeleton that had moved into my closet.”

    1. It was SO GOOD! I did not expect the twist at the end, McManus is really good with those.

  8. "Shortly after the Kansas City Hyatt Regency Hotel skywalks collapsed in 1981, one of my neighbors asked me how such a thing could happen. He wondered, did engineers not even know enough to build so simple a structure as an elevated walkway?"

    1. Have we talked about this one before, maybe from a Stacking the Shelves? It sounds familiar.

    2. Yes, I bought it and mentioned it just a few weeks ago. A *fast* turn around for me!

    3. Thought so! I will def look for your review, it is one I am on the fence about. Partly because there was a terrible bridge collapse in my home city some years ago and it was scary because I have family members who use that bridge regularly and calls were not going through because everyone else was calling to check on their loved ones too, so it took a while to get the news that everyone was accounted for. I want to know, but on the other hand, I don't.

    4. Just finished it today. There's LOTS in there about bridges and bridge failures which sounds like it'll be a good and maybe bad thing for you. It's excellent and I'll be picking up more by him plus other engineering works. It definitely makes you look at things differently.

    5. I'm sure. Even though it has been over ten years, it makes me very uncomfortable to be stopped on or under a bridge. That feeling will never go away, I fear.
