Books from the Backlog, hosted by Carole's Random Life in Books, is a fun way to feature some of those neglected books sitting on your shelf unread.
I stumbled on this one thanks (again) to Chuckles. I have been toying with this one for a while because I have so many memes and features that I participate in, there are hardly time for reviews it feels like. But I am hoping this will also help with my whole TBR situation, so I can find some treasures that I have forgotten about.
Neglected Book of the Week
Why did I add In Search of the Trojan War to my TBR?
Mainly because this is one myth that might actually be true. With the discovery of Troy in the late 1880s (though at first it was believed to be a hoax because Schliemann was a con man and super shady), this has piqued my interest since I first learned of it years ago. Last year the ancient Greek city of Tenea was discovered, which is the city supposedly built by the survivors of the Trojan War. Discoveries are constantly being made, and who knows what might be discovered next. I am eager to find out what is already known, to have a better idea of what might still be out there for us to find.
Have you read this book, or is it somewhere on your TBR? If you've read it, would you recommend it to others?
You read such a wide range of topics, it's great! I hope to have more time to read history in the future.
ReplyDeleteThank you! Once we get this TBR thing under control, you will have more time!!
DeleteI have not read this one, but I am thinking of doing a stint of novels set in India, many of which are on my shelves.
ReplyDeleteIsn't it funny how we think about reading as much as we actually read??
DeleteA myth that could be true...well, to the extent of Greek city-states fighting a city in Troy, maybe. I doubt Helen or the gods were involved. If there was a real Trojan horse, I'd love to know the real story!
ReplyDeleteWell I thought THAT part went without saying, lol. The excavations are so interesting, how they have discovered numerous Troys built on top of one another.
DeleteThe Trojan War always fascinated me, especially when people started talking about how it might actually be rooted in historical fact (minus the, um, gods' intervention and what not lol)!
ReplyDeleteHa, like I told Stephen I thought that part went without saying, lol! I love the archaeology aspect, and how they've found numerous Troys built on top of one another. So much history just waiting for us to find it!
DeleteI've seen some of his TV shows but haven't read any of his books. Troy is a great story - as we're still talking about it (and making books/movies!)... How much of it is TRUE is another matter!
ReplyDeleteI really enjoy his books, but have yet to see any of his shows. I love the archaeology aspect, being on those digs and making a discovery like Troy would have been so amazing.
DeleteThis definitely sounds interesting. I really don't know a whole lot about the Trojan War so this sounds like a very worthwhile read. I do hope you enjoy it!
ReplyDeleteThank you Carole! My library doesn't have it, so I will be on the hunt for it at Half Price Books in the near-future.
DeleteI know bits and pieces about the subject and would like to learn more. I hope you enjoy this:)
ReplyDeleteThank you Laura! I admit I am more interested in the archaeology of Troy and whether or not the war took place (minus the Gods and such), but what an interesting history it is!
DeleteI love archaeology so I find these topics amazing. I read a book years ago about Troy, but I remember it being rather dry. I found the Iliad and Odyssey a bit long, too, but that's my problem.
ReplyDeleteI really like this author and have read a few of his books - and many more are still on my TBR. Give him a try if you get the chance!
