First Line Friday #117

First Line Friday is brought to you by Hoarding Books. Playing along is easy: open the book nearest you and share the first line. Then check out the link to see the other first lines posted this week.

***You might have noticed an increase in recent weeks of books written by Black and African-American authors in a variety of genres. Since the murder of George Floyd and the spotlight once again shining on the mistreatment of our Black Brothers and Sisters, I am working on amplifying voices that often get shouted down. I have started a #BlackLivesMatter Reading List and would love any suggestions over on that page. My main contributions so far have been of non-fiction, big surprise, so I am looking for fiction especially.***

    1. It is FANTASTIC. It is told in verse and such a quick read, but such a worthwhile one about a teenager whose older brother is gunned down on the street and he has to get revenge because that's what The Code says you do. The entire book is his ride from the floor where he and his mom have an apartment, to the ground level, where he has to decide if he is going through with getting that revenge or not. It is SO SO good. I cried a lot at the end.

    1. Yes it is! It is about a teenager whose brothers was gunned down in the street and he has to follow the code and get revenge. The whole book is his experience taking the elevator down from his floor to the ground level. It's in verse, and absolutely stunning. I cried so much in the end.

    1. It is so good, and worth the wait. I was bawling at the end, but I can't say why because then it completely gives away everything. I will just say that it was the last person who got on that made me completely lose it.

  11. My current read is Practically Married by Karin Beery. I'm just starting the second chapter, so I will share the first line of that chapter. "The sharp edge of reality sliced through Russ' heart." May you have a blessed week.
