My daughter turned seven today and exactly no one will be surprised that her gifts included a purple typewriter (from my mom) and new books (from me).
Eleanor has wanted a typewriter for ages, ever since she read the book 'As Fast As Words Could Fly' by Pamela M. Tuck.
Eleanor began typing right away and pretty much hammered away at the keys all day. It was really cute. She's such a little writer already.
If you're familiar with the Fancy Nancy series with Nancy and Bree as kindergarten students, then you will recognize them as third graders in the Nancy Clancy series that Eleanor and I read a couple months ago. In those books, Nancy loved reading Nancy Drew mysteries, so naturally Eleanor became interested in the teen sleuth. I bought a set of the first ten books in the series and Eleanor can't wait to start reading them.
We also enjoyed yummy take-out from one of our fave restaurants and you can't really go wrong with a DQ ice cream cake for dessert. I think she had a pretty good birthday and we are looking forward to her safe and socially-distanced birthday parade tomorrow.
Happy Reading!
Sarah
the purple typewriter is a wonderful present! happy birthday Eleanor!
ReplyDeleteThank you!!
DeleteIsn't it cool?! And I was surprised that it was not nearly as expensive as I thought a typewriter would be - not to mention a couple extra ribbons to get her started.
No surprise that a typewriter was the gift, but it doesn't make it any less awesome! I love that you encourage her to be a writer and reader. I never read the Nancy Drew books as a kid, but Encyclopedia Brown was my go-to for many years!
ReplyDeleteI loved Encyclopedia Brown! I was actually looking at some of those for Eleanor also, but decided to stick to Nancy Drew first because of her connection with the Nancy Clancy books. She wants to be a detective, so I am sure we will get to them soon!
DeleteHappy 7th birthday, Eleanor!!! I'm impressed that she wanted a TYPEWRITER. A foresee a Pulitzer Prize in someones future! [lol]
ReplyDeleteThank you!! <3
DeleteRight??!! I used to love using my aunt's electric typewriter to type my stories, but this kid wanted the original thing (actually, I don't think she even knows electric typewriters are a thing, because the one in the book I mentioned was a manual,) She is having so much fun typing letters instead of handwriting them.
Really interesting idea of hers fora typewriter! Was that one old new stock, or are there contemporary electric typewriters still being sold?
ReplyDelete(By old new stock, I mean an unopened commercial product that is considered obsolete...there's a market for old new stock stuff in the retrotech community. Some people have even found original IBM ATs, never touched. O_O)
Dang, that would be amazing to find originals like that!
DeleteThe Royal Typewriter Company is still in operation (they sell other things in addition to typewriters now) and Eleanor's is a manual typewriter even! Actually, I don't even think she knows electric typewriters are a thing. The book she had read, the boy had a manual typewriter. She is absolutely loving typing letters to people, it;s so cute to watch her all hunched over, hammering away at the keys.
Happy Birthday, Eleanor! I trace my writing ambitions to the Nancy Drew books. I attempted to write one of my own when I was nine or ten years old, when I discovered how MANY words one had to write to make a whole book! I am still rather stuck in that overwhelmed state but still trying.
ReplyDeleteThank you! <3
DeleteI started writing a murder mystery because of Fear Street and Scream, though I did love Nancy Drew when I was younger. I suppose I started writing regular mysteries around that time, they did not get murder-y until I got into Fear Street, haha.
Right now Eleanor's favorite thing to write is letters. She's quite proud of her work thus far.
I love that your daughter got a typewriter and books for her birthday! I've always been intrigued by the idea of one, but never thought they were practical to use. For school assignments? Absolutely. For anything work related? Not so efficient. :)

She is so obsessed with it, we are going to be running out of ribbon pretty quickly. She is having so much fun with it and I am glad my mom was able to find one - I didn't even know they made many anymore, and I thought they would be way more expensive.
DeleteThat's so cute. I hope she had a wonderful birthday.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much! We had a birthday parade on Saturday and it was great to have people drive through, decorating car windows, waving signs, and celebrating my girl. The weather was perfect, so many friends showed up, it was great. Eleanor has been typing up a storm every day, she is absolutely obsessed with the typewriter.
