First Line Friday #141

First Line Friday is hosted once again by Carrie at Reading is my Superpower. You can visit HERE to go directly to the FLF page of her blog.

Playing along is easy: open the book nearest you and share the first line. Then check out the link to see the other first lines posted this week.

Before leaving for work each morning, Frank LaGassie, a thirty-four-year-old photostat operator, often wandered up and down the southern shore of Lake Eerie looking for driftwood.

Leave a comment and let me know what you think, and leave a link to your FLF so I can stop by to see what you've posted this week.

Happy Reading!
Sarah

  1. So, what is he going to do with all that driftwood? Interesting beginning.

    1. Turned out to be a really interesting but frustrating book because the killer was never caught. I have just checked out another book on the same topic from the library that I am excited to start, to see what other information I can glean, to form my opinion.

  2. Hmmmm, is he looking to set something on fire I'm wondering?

    1. I don't know what his intentions were, but he found part of a dead body!

  3. March 1799, The Port of London. "Moses Solomon woke with a start and stared out over the Thames. The inky blackness of the night was pierced by the shimmering light of several dozen lanterns on the ships lying at anchor in the Lower Pool."

    1. More and more every single day, I want to be in London. Or Edinburgh. Or Dublin. Like, I wish I had just flown to Scotland when I was pregnant with Eleanor and given birth there. Then they could not make me leave!! Eleanor wants to go when Harry Styles is done touring, because she is determined to meet him.

We have a lovely little shop here called Chippy's, run by a man who is from England and it is our favorite place. We go in a couple times a week for breakfast and yummy treats; scones and tarts and butties. Last weekend I ordered a full English for Eleanor and I and made her try the black pudding. She gagged, naturally. All my friends in and around London keep telling me to just move already. *sigh* I wish!

    2. I'd gag with black pudding too! I hated even the *thought* of it even when I was a carnivore (or omnivore to be accurate). I did like the rest though - except for the fried mushrooms. Yuk! Scones, now you're talking... My mum made LOVELY scones - melt in your mouth. Do you have them with cream or jam or both? Or just butter...?

    3. It is pretty gross, but I am proud of her for even taking the tiniest bite. The mushrooms are delicious, though I can do without tomatoes in general. I love scones so much - jam and buytter please! Same with crumpets. I am so looking forward to when Chippy's opens their restaurant (have to wait until 2024 I think, they're opening a few more store locations in the Midwest). It's such a lovely little shop, I wish I could do all my grocery shopping there. It's dry goods only, with some fridge/freezer items. I told Eleanor that next she has to try the mincement pie lol

  4. My first line comes from Worthy of Legend by Roseanna White:
The sea was vengeance. The sea was justice. The sea was the hand of the Almighty, stretched out to slap and strike.

  5. I'm currently reading Worthy of Legend by Roseanna M. White. It's SO good!
"The end of the evening was at long last in sight, which lured Emily into relaxation. Too soon, however."
Hope you have a good weekend!
