Oh, and I've just posted another 'Looking Backwards' post that you'll find interesting no doubt....
DeleteYou know, I have yet to see One of Us is Lying on any of these posts...have I missed where you picked it up and then loved it so much that you realized why I have a special spot in my heart for YA thrillers?? :)
DeleteYou'll love Becoming, because Michelle is awesome. I think I would like Blood of the Isles but I will wait for your review first.
I just read it before getting back to my comments here. SO CRAZY! You're are finding out so many things that others in your family probably don't know either. I am waiting to see what you discover next!!
DeleteWell, I did promise to read 'THUG' - which I will @ some point (as I have that one in a stack somewhere). I've just finished another book by Bryan Sykes on Dog Evolution (LOTS of genetics in that one!) which I thought really good, so I'm looking forward to his take on British DNA.
DeleteI'm still only skimming the surface on my Ancestry thing. It's amazing what you can find (and speculate about) from a handful of records. My family know none of this. Until recently our collective knowledge only went back 2-3 generations. Now we can go back 500 years. My next few posts will be more 'Life & Death' stories. I'm starting to find a few more US links - both before & after Independence.
Yes yes, you must read The Hate U Give. It's so good and transcends the YA genre because it is important and timely. I am super interested in the Sykes one - on humans though, not dogs.
DeleteI have been trying to find my grandpa's log-in and password for 23andMe, because it is so cool - yet now the scrap is lost somewhere in my desk and I'll have to get it from him again. You are really spurring my renewed interest in my family history.
Cool. Let us know what you find out. I was having fun tonight with family names - mostly 'Grubs' and 'Badgers' in today's searching. But they did have some fantastical names hundreds of years ago!
DeleteI do know that we share ancestors with Louis the XIV or Louis the XVI, I can't remember which one and now of course I can't find the documents on the website. I've always made fun of France, and it turns out we are French. Blech. But also still suuuuuuuper German as well.
DeleteYou had another good haul this week. I'm looking forward to your review of the new Jones book.
ReplyDeleteIt is GLORIOUS. I am about halfway done - it's massive. But then again, he's covering 1000 years of history. I love it so much, all of my fave people and places crammed into one book. I almost don't want to finish it because I just want to keep reading it over and over and over.
DeleteAhh, Velvet Was The Night -- I have a bad habit of getting SMG's books as ARCs, and then not reading them until they're actually out. Gotta behave myself this time...
ReplyDeleteI requested it because I saw it over on your blog a couple weeks ago! I have only read Mexican Gothic so I am very new to this author. But, I did like Mexican Gothic even though the reveal was not what I expected at all.
Deletei looked for Jones at the book sale but they didn't have any... lots of others, tho: i came home with about forty i think, including a Loeb Vitruvius and a complete Washington Irving short stories... and lots of old mysteries and a bunch of sci fi: ms. Asimov's books on Norby the Robot...
ReplyDeleteThat's a bummer. At this rate, I will just have to send you some! But it sounds like you have plenty of others to keep you busy, and I am happy for that :)
Deleteforgot: i found a new free book source on the web: Booksjar, w/ about 3500 on all subjects incl/most of perry mason...
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing!! We talked about Perry Mason a while back and I am going to start there. Any particular one I should start with first or does it make a difference?
DeleteI looked up Booksjar because it is one I am not familiar with and it looks like it should be safe, but just be careful because there is not a lot known about it and I would hate for your information to get stolen online.
Deletetx Sarah... i don't worry about that too much; as the saying goes, "who steals my purse steals trash"lol... the PM's vary a lot, so anywhere would give you an idea about how they go...
DeleteNo problem, just wanted you to be aware! I always look up info about new sites like that and just wanted to make sure you knew the potential risk. I didn't find users so far who had claimed anything neferious was afoot, but just wanted to be on the safe side.
DeleteVelvet Was The Night looks good! I got so many new books this week that I've lost count lol
ReplyDeleteLol, I know what you mean, some weeks I end up with so many that putting this post together is a pain. I have only read Mexican Gothic so I am not sure what to expect from Velvet. I'm excited for it though!
DeleteSilvio Moreno- Garcia seems to keep pumping them out!
ReplyDeleteI have only read Mexican Gothic so far. What other books of hers do you really like??
DeleteI haven't read any of hers yet! I just keep seeing rave reviews, especially of Mexican Gothic, but others too, and she seems prolific. I really like the sound of Gothic.
DeleteAh, gotcha! Mexican Gothic was different, but I liked it. The ending was not what I expected and I am glad I did not know all that it entailed going in, or I might not have read it because I would have thought it was too outside my realm of interest. It's one I think you would like too.
