I think I read an Ian Mortimer book a while back, a visit to the Middle Ages written from a time traveller perspective which sounds a bit naff I know, but was actually really informative and engaging. I particularly remember him talking about the sounds and smells one would encounter upon entering a Medieval town (mostly eughhh on both counts!).
