Stacking the Shelves 3

Stacking the Shelves is all about sharing the books you are adding to your shelves, whether it be physical or virtual. You can include books you buy in-store or online, books you borrow from friends or the library, review books, gifts, and of course ebooks! To find out more, visit the official launch page.

I had no intention of procuring any new books, aside from the pending requests I have still lingering on NetGalley, which I hopefully will be approved for soon.

Buuuuuuut...

I had a couple coupons to one of my favorite bookstores, Divine Truth. And since I am trying to be an adult, I thought it would be a good idea to go get this book:

...to help further my progress in being a better money-manager. The book and workbook were on sale, so it was perfect timing. Until ten other books demanded to be purchased as well...

Clearly, I am Ramsey's target audience but so help me if he tries to cure me of this compulsion to buy books constantly, we will have a problem.

And then when I was at the register, the owner of the store, Mr Rod Mackrill, made a comment about me liking to read and asked if I had read his wife's book. I said I didn't know and asked who she was; he said, "Hold on a minute", then returned about a minute later and gave me a copy of her book.

I am pretty pleased with this unexpected haul, and so touched by the generosity of Mr Mackrill for the gift of his wife Susan's book. Let me know what gems you found this week and what you think of mine.

Happy Reading!
Sarah

  1. That Gallaty book looks interesting! I'm always a sucker for works about Jesus' Jewish roots. Two in that area I like are "The Crucified Rabbi" and "Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist".

    1. Same here! I especially love the ones that put Him in the proper context of the era in which He lived. That is so important to understanding His ministry. I will check out the ones you suggested, I've added them to my TBR. And even though I am Protestant, I love reading about Catholicism - I heart Pope Francis, he is the pope the world needs but does not deserve!

    2. Did you see that he married two cabin staff on his flight in Chile? That was *so* cool. Imagine years later when the marriage comes up in conversation!

    3. Yes!! It was such a great story, can you even imagine? How giddy they must have been to be married by POPE FRANCIS! Despite the fact that I am neither in a relationship or even interested in being in one, I'm a tiny bit jealous of their cool wedding story.

    4. Speaking of Rome and Italy, odd question for you: do you know of a book blogger who focuses only on books with an "Italian" connection -- set in Italy, featuring Italian-Americans, etc? I ask because at some point last week I spotted a blog with that focus at work while reading the blogs I follow (the author/publisher commented on a post, I think), but when I tried to find them at home...I was at a loss. This is just a shot in the dark, of course, but your comment section is among the more active I visit so I suspected I might have encountered them here. Perhaps they're reading this and will say hello..

    5. I have poked around a bit at the blogs of others commenting and so far was not able to find a blog focusing on Italy or any connections to Italy. Do you remember if the focus was fiction or non-fiction? or both? Off the top of my head I also can not think of one. I know for sure it would not be any of the bloggers from my First Line Friday posts, because those are the blogs I visit most often. My biggest source of comments was last week's TTT about book goals, maybe check there? Sorry I am not more helpful :(

    1. Wow, only one?? That's amazing, and you have a lot more self-control than I do, congratulations! I've heard of Silent Spring but I don't recall what it is about, I'll have to look it up.

    2. Well, I bought 8 last week so it all evens out in the end. 'Silent Spring' essentially started the modern environmental movement.

    3. Ah yes, that does jog my memory. I am interested in reading, but I am so utterly depressed right now by this stupid government an especially the joke that the EPA is now, I don't know if I can read it without crying.

  3. Self help and religious works books are things I never read really so I'm not familiar with these books. A splurge is always good fun though!

    1. It is very easy to do at that bookstore for sure. I was away from a church for a long time but once I had my daughter, I found my faith again. It's been a long journey and one I am not done with yet by any means, but I am happier than I've been in a long time. I really enjoy Christian non-fiction, whether historical, Bible study texts, or specific topics like parenting and prayer.

  4. Oh interesting. I haven’t read any religious books lately. I hope you enjoy them all. Have a wonderful reading week and happy reading. 😁❤️

    1. it is so easy to lose an hour or two in the bookstore - and to come out with far more than I planned to when going in! I'm excited to get started on this mini pile, happy reading!

  5. The Total Money Makeover is a must read. It helped me pay off our consumer debt and we no longer dread the next $$ emergency. I'm gifting it to both my kids before they head out on their own. I wish I had been given his advice when I was a newbie home owner! His podcast is also a must listen. It really keeps me on track.

    1. Yes, I am so excited to get started! Unfortunately I had just paid all my monthly bills right before the book went on sale, so I am cooling my heels here waiting for Feb 15th (pay day - once a month, boo!) so I can get moving on this. I had previously paid off all my debt except for my student loans and car loan, but I let it get out of control again, which is my fault. But I read the book in one night and now I know that with a specific plan to follow, I can stay on track and get out of this hole I dug for myself.
