Books From The Backlog #69

Books from the Backlog, hosted by Carole's Random Life in Books, is a fun way to feature some of those neglected books sitting on your shelf unread.

I am featuring books in the order that they were added to my Goodreads To-Read shelf, so sometimes there will be a couple weeks in a row of books on the same topic.

Neglected Book of the Week

Why did I add In Search of the First Civilizations to my TBR?

Because there's nothing I love daydreaming about more than these lost civilizations.

Have you read this book, or is it somewhere on your TBR? If you've read it, would you recommend it to others?

Happy Reading!

Because I like Wickham's work and I love the Middle Ages.

Neglected Book of the Week

Why did I add The Real Middle Earth: Magic and Mystery in the Dark Ages to my TBR?

Because I LOVE this period, though I hate that some authors still refer to this time as the dark ages. It really wasn't all that dark. Those monks in Ireland busted their asses to make sure we didn't lose all kinds of knowledge.

Because sometimes it is nice to see he wasn't always a fucking monster who ordered the executions of so many innocent people.

Why did I add The Story of England to my TBR?

Because I love England's history. Especially when it goes back to Roman Britain. I don't think this one goes back that far, but I bet I will get some Anglo-Saxon goodness at least.

Because he is the one bastard that Henry acknowledged and I want to more about him. Always curious to think what Henry might have done to get this son on the throne.

Why did I add The Last Days of Henry VIII to my TBR?

Because I like Hutchinson's books and find his takes on his subject interesting. I have read so much about the Tudors over the years that I really like finding these books that focus on a specific section of his rule, or a specific topic.

Why did I add The Mistresses of Henry VIII to my TBR?

Because I'm curious to see how many mistresses and illegitimate children this author is going to propose that Henry had. I have read some pretty outlandish claims backed up by little-to-no evidence and wonder what I will find here.

Why did I add Anne of Cleves: Henry VIII's Discarded Bride to my TBR?

Because she is easily the most successful of his wives (unless you count Jane having the common sense to die before Henry could find fault and execute her too) and managed to outlive every last one of them.

Why did I add Anne Boleyn: The Young Queen to Be to my TBR?

Because she is an unfortunate part of the Tudor dynasty and I can't not continue to read about her just because I think she is a wench.

Why did I add Tudor Cousins: Rivals for the Throne to my TBR?

Because at any point after Henry VIII died the Tudor reign could have been radically altered from what we know it as today. The possibilities are deliciously endless.

Why did I add Mary Tudor: The Tragical History of the First Queen of England to my TBR?

Because I have great empathy for Mary I. Given the trauma she endured, I am not surprised that she ruled as she did. She has this moniker labeling her a mass murderer in the name of religion, when her father and sister were both guilty of the same crimes - and Henry for sure had more people executed. It doesn't make ANY of their crimes right, but people would do well to at least look at the history fairly and objectively. History is written by the victors after all, so in that regard as well, Mary never stood a chance.

Tudor Queens of England

Why did I add The Tudor Queens of England to my TBR?

Because even though the Plantagenets long ago replaced the Tudors as my fave dynasty, I still love reading anything and everything I can find on both families. At this point so much of it is repetitive because I have read so many texts, but I don't think I will ever stop reading books on either family.
