Top Ten Tuesday | New-to-Me Authors I Discovered in 2022

Ever since Karen McManus completely upended my world with One of Us is Lying, I have strayed far and wide from my non-fiction treasures. I always come home to them again, but I have discovered that despite not being the target audience, I really fucking love YA mysteries/thrillers. Here are some authors I found in 2022, in no particular order. The books I include with each author are those I have rated four stars or higher. I did not necessarily love all books by the author, but I really, really loved these. It serves as a great reminder for me that I will never love EVERYTHING an author writes, unless that author is my most favorite historian of all time, Dan Jones. No exceptions. Not even for my queen, Karen McManus (You'll Be the Death of Me was not my fave).

1. Jennifer Lynn Barnes

2. Mindy McGinnis

3. Amy Reed

4. Goldy Moldavsky

5. Ginny Myers Sain

6. Jennifer Donaldson

7. Nicole Lesperance

8. Kathleen Glasgow

9. Jessica Goodman

10. Kara Thomas

11. Lily Sparks

12. Natalie C. Parker

Are any of these authors new to you, or are they old favorites? Have you read other books by them that you loved? Let me know!

Happy Reading
Sarah

    1. I LOVED it so much, it was such a riot! Perfect timing t - my nine year old discovered Harry Styles when Harry's House came out, and then she found out he was in 1D, so this read was extra funny to me.

    1. Such a fun series! There's a 4th coming out, I am so excited for it! I haven't read any of the author's other books but this series is top-notch.

  11. I have not read any of these authors. I think it's great when we can find new authors outside of our typical wheel houses.

    1. For sure! If someone had told me in 2015 when I started my blog that I would one day have a whole TTT post dedicated to YA thrillers, I would have laughed.

  12. None of these are ones I've read, but The Nowhere Girls is on my TBR so it's good to see you loved it. I'm glad you said that about not necessarily loving everything by favourite authors: I have many authors I consider favourites but I wouldn't say I've loved absolutely everything they've ever put out, for example, VE Schwab is one of my favourite authors but I'm not as big a fan of her YA stuff as I am her adult stuff, it doesn't make you any less of a fan if there are some books of an author's that you don't like as much!

    1. Nowhere Girls might even be my most favorite of all of these amazing books. It was so good and such a powerful read. McGinnes is an author who I LOVED some of her work, and did not like others. Funny you mention Schwab - I really like her Cassidy Blake series but have not read her adult stuff. Which of those works would you recommend to start with?

    1. Like Nowhere Girls, Female of the Species is one of my most faves of all the books on the list. They're both so, so good. Very powerful. Hope you like it when you get to it!

  16. So many great picks. I wish Jennifer Donaldson had more; I read both of hers in quick succession in '21 and I would have read a third if there was one! Jennifer Lynn Barnes made my list the same way (after which I really enjoyed The Lovely and the Lost), and Mindy McGinnis is also high on my list of reliable authors. And Kara Thomas, Jessica Goodman, and Kathleen Glasgow all have at least two titles on my theoretical TBR.

Great point that you don't necessarily love all the books from your author picks -- to be honest, whether they are all different concepts or the author picks a style groove and sticks with it, I find it pretty rare that I love everything an author writes. Frankly, if they can land 2 or 3 solid hits, I tend to consider them a favorite on some level, just because it's so hard to keep my ever-more-divided attention in the giant world of books.

    1. Thank you! I agree on Donaldson, I want more from her! I have only read the Hawthorne books by Barnes, but plan to get to her other works in the future. I have not loved everything by McGinnis, but REALLY loved the ones I included here (obviously). I would also agree that 2 or 3 solid hits is a good record.

  17. Wow - I don't know any of these and they all have great covers. I haven't tried any YA mystery/thrillers.....maybe that's a genre I need to explore! And, so true about not loving everything by a fave author. For me the first one that comes to mind is Fredrik Backman. I LOVE 80% of what he's written and I've read them all - but a couple weren't my faves...... I'll still read everything he puts out! I've bookmarked this page to come back and get some YA direction when I'm ready! Thanks for a great list.

    1. I am very new to YA thrillers and am completely in love with the genre. It started with One of Us is Lying by Karen McManus. I started out very selectively and hardly read anything else but slowly my net has been cast wider and wider. I read for YA thrillers in 2022 than any other year. I hope you give one a try, you never know how much you might love it! I certainly never envisioned this when I started my blog with all my non-fiction treasures.

  18. I enjoyed The Agathas. I don't tend to go for YA stuff, but when I do I tend to enjoy it.

    Have a great week!
