We are officially down to one more week of school!
I have three days with students, then two work days. Eleanor has school the entire week.
But after that...
SUMMER IS HERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRE!
It's been super chaotic these last few weeks, and extremely exhausting. We've had Field Day (twice, once for K-2 and the next day for 3-5 - I had 24,000 steps in these two days), then a field trip for my second graders and one the next day for my 5th graders. Plus, end-of-the-year paperwork. Tuesday is the 5th grade celebration for my babies, some of whom I have had since second grade. This will be a very hard group to say good bye to. They are the first Covid Babies - the ones who did not get to finish Kindergarten, then had to start first grade on iPads.
Side note: giving elementary students iPads was a terrible idea. The district now has to continue justifying the costs by requiring students use certain apps X amount of minutes per week. Because OBVIOUSLY an app can teach just as good as a living breathing human. *eyeroll*
Eleanor and I are so excited for the summer fun headed our way. We have Eleanor's next gig next weekend with her performance class, then a cousin's graduation. Then Eleanor has a Taylor Swift summer camp, of which she is the only kiddo signed up who plays an instrument, the rest signed up as vocalists. So guess who will likely be playing on all songs? After that she has aother week-long camp, this time for show choir. Then in July we get to go visit family for two whole weeks. Plus there will be whatever daily mischief we can get up to in between all of these things.
As for right now, we are off to see Hamilton in a couple hours.
Happy ALMOST Summer Break!

My older daughter who works in the school system is looking forward to summer break.
ReplyDeleteI am officially on break as I type. When is she done?
DeleteYeah....! You'll be there before you know it....! Have FUN!!!! Plus read and *relax* as much as possible - of course!
ReplyDeleteOfficially on break as of Friday, May 23rd! I'm doing nothing this week except reading and hanging out with Eleanor. It will be glorious.
DeleteWow, I know this but I am always amazed how early your school year finishes. Most of our kids have to go to the end of June or even mid July. But I'm happy for you. You will have a well-deserved pause. And enjoy your time with Eleanor.
ReplyDeleteTwo of our grand-nephews and nieces are Covid babies, they were born during Covid, their fathers were not allowed in the hospital and all that. They grew up with people with masks in front of them. So far, they are lovely children, so I hope that it didn't affect the kids in their situation too much.
When does the school year begin for kids there? We start mid-August so we get out at the end of May, but some states start in the beginning of September, so they don't get out untilJune.
DeleteOne of my good friends was pregnant during Covid and lived in one of the hardest-hit areas of Italy. Her birth plan changed completely, she couldn't see her regular doctor, and her husband couldn't be there for the birth. Luckily all turned out well and baby girl is thriving.
It depends in what state you live. The first ones start beginning of July and end mid August, the last ones beginning of August until mid September. The Southern states always have the late start whereas the others alternate. If you were the first this year, you will be on second place the next etc.
DeleteAnd our summer holidays only last 6 weeks.
So is it more of year-round school, with breaks throughout?
DeleteI don't know how many breaks you have during the year. We have a week in autumn, two at Christmas and two at Easter, so eleven altogether.
DeleteInteresting. In my school district we get two weeks at Christmas, a week for Spring Break, then all of June and July off. Sometimes we get a week for Thanksgiving and sometimes it's three days. It depends on the school district, because Eleanor's schedule is a little different from mine.
DeleteI just like it better when there are shorter times to learn. It gets quite exhausting toward the end of every term both for the teachers as well as the students. Shorter terms are better.
DeleteWe also have random days off throughout the year, for PD and plan time.
DeleteThere are always extra holidays during the year. I think Germany has one of the most anywhere.
DeleteYeah, we have specific one-day holidays. I wish we got time at Easter though. We don't get anything for that.
DeleteYes, it's nicer if the terms are not so long.
DeleteOur year is divided into quarters from mid-August to the end of May. I think each is 12 weeks. I honestly don't remember at this point.
DeleteThat's fine. Enjoy your holidays.
DeleteThank you! So far, so good!
DeleteWohoo for you. We still have a month to go and I think I may be more excited to turn off those alarms then the kids.
ReplyDeleteGood luck to you! We start in mid-August, so we are out at the end of May. But I grew up in Minnesota and we always started after Labor Day, so didn't get out until June. Not sure which one I like better, but summer is here and Eleanor and I will enjoy every moment! Deleting those alarms on Friday morning of my last teacher work day was absolutely wonderful.
