Eleanor Reads! March Edition

Each month Eleanor and I share the chapter books we've read in that period. We've been reading chapter books since before Kindergarten and her attention span as a four year old was definitely something to brag about. Eleanor was born a reader and that makes my heart so, so happy.

Read

DNF
I chose to DNF this one for us. The book started out with Nancy, Bess, and George hanging out with a new student, Mary White Cloud. Mary had been singled out by their teacher for the Thanksgiving festival/event/whatever to choose three classmates to be "Native American Princesses" with her that year. Um, what? Not at all cool.

Do the kiddos in your life have an interest in any of these?

Happy Reading,
Eleanor and Sarah

  1. What a lovely selection of books. I agree with you that when one encounters a book that has outdated sensibilities about race, gender, or other issues, such as the Nancy Drew book you mention and the recent kerfuffle over some of Dr. Seuss, it is appropriate to set them aside.

    1. Yes! I was surprised by this even happening in this Nancy Drew series, because it is a more recent publication. The whole thing with Dr Seuss is so silly, how everyone is freaking out. It's a decision his own estate made, and it really is not that big of a loss. If they really wanted to make an impact, they would pull The Cat in the Hat.

  2. This is so sweet. I haven't read any of those books with my boys though we have read Magic Treehouse books, don't know whether these are a sort of follow-up. And we have, of course, read books like the one about Kamala Harris and I think it's great that you read with Eleanor about her. So important for kids, no matter whether girls or boys, to learn about strong women like her.

    1. We've read all the Magic Tree House, Merlin Missions, Field Guides, Research Notebooks. You name it, we've read it if it is a MTH book.

The tree house series featured heavily here is unrelated, but hilarious and we love them. We are trying to patiently wait for the next installment, due out soon.

    2. They're still writing new ones? How fabulous.

    3. I hope there will be more coming. They did a 'super special' one that was much longer than the regular books, based on WWI. It was fantastic. We've read every book that has been published so far and I really hope there are still more to come.

    4. We also read all of them, until my children outgrew the stories, unfortunately.

Enjoy the rest of the time with Eleanor reading them.

    5. Thank you! I checked on them a bit ago and there is a new one coming out this year. Even though they are eays reads for Eleanor now, she still likes reading them together. I hope she does not outgrow them too soon!

    6. Probably not. She'll abandon them once she's a teenager but not much earlier. At least that was the case with my boys. My eldest read "Lord of the Ring" when he was eleven but still liked his old kiddies books.

    7. She still has not let go of her easy I Can Read books yet either, despite the fact that she outgrew them YEARS ago. Some are so worn, you can really tell which were the favorites. I hope she keeps those forever too, even when she does not read them anymore. They are well-loved.

    8. My boys have books like that and although we also sold a lot of their old children's books, the favourites wouldn't leave the house. They wanted to keep them just as much as we did.

    9. Yep, there are ones that will stay with her forever, just like I have ones that are with me forever.

  4. We haven't read any of these, but my son is still obsessed with Goosebumps! We've read sooo many of those, haha. I was thinking about looking for the Hank the Cowdog books I remember reading in school.

    1. I haven't thought about Hank the Cowdog in ages, wow. Eleanor loves Goosebumps too, and I have tons from when I was a kid so as soon as I can dig them out of my mom's garage, Eleanor can have them.
