First Line Friday #185

First Line Friday is a weekly feature and simple to do - grab the book nearest you and post the first line. Carrie hosts this over on her blog Reading is my Superpower.

It took some doing to respond to Daniel Gingerich's message.

Happy Reading!

  1. "It was in the spring of the year 1894 that all London was interested, and the fashionable world dismayed, by the murder of the Honourable Ronald Adair under the most unusual and inexplicable circumstances." 'The Empty House' in 'The Return of Sherlock Holmes' by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

    1. I've got some non-fiction to read about Conan Doyle, but they're probably titles I found through you. His fascination with spiritualists and spiritualism is so mind-boggling, given his most famous creation operated solely on facts and logic.

    2. Not forgetting his ardent belief in Fairies.... Yup, he was a man of many contradictions I think.

    3. Yes, so many contradictions. I can never make it make sense.

Thanks for visiting my little book nook. I love talking books so leave a comment and let's chat!
