"In other wars more people have died, more nations been involved and the world brought closer to annihilation, but somehow the First World War retains a dread aura all of its own."
ReplyDeleteThe Trigger - The Hunt for Gavrilo Princip: The Assassin who Brought the World to War by Tim Butcher.
Yay!! I am so glad you are reading this one! I really liked it.
DeleteIt's a bit of an odd one and has a somewhat misleading title - but I did find it interesting on a number of levels. Only 10 pages to go, so I'll finish it later.
DeleteAgreed, it was a travelogue as well which I was not expecting. But it is the first book I've ever read that focused so much on Princip and who he was, why he took part in the assassination. In revious books on WWI that I've read, most of the time his name isn't even mentioned, he's just called 'an assassin', and so I knew nothing of him for so long.

ReplyDeleteAmerican Phoenix: John Quincy and Louisa Adams, the War of 1812, and the Exile That Saved American Independence
Good on him. I don't conceal my true feelings about anything from anyone.
