Tackling the TBR Week 2: Jan 8-Jan 14, 2019

Each week I will be keeping track of books that I have read from my TBR. I have a huge backlog of books and often end up reading new books that are not even on my list, instead of trying to whittle down the list that continues to balloon up on Goodreads. Chuckles had the idea first, and we are going to use this as a chance to encourage each other to get those books read instead of always grabbing new ones and thus never making a dent in the physical and digital stacks we already have. It will also give us a chance to take a good look at our lists and see if there are ones we are no longer interested in. We will be posting on the 7th, 14th, 21st, and the last day of the month.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Previous Week's TBR Total: 4,334

Previous Week's Currently Reading Total: 62

Books Added to TBR This Week: 4 (ONE IS THE NEW DN JONES' BOOK AND I CAN'T STOP SHOUTING ABOUT IT!)

Books Removed from TBR This Week: 16

Books Finished This Week: 17

Books DNF-ed This Week: 34

New Currently Reading: 14

New TBR Total: 4,320

(Note: I am still whittling down the list of those cozy mystery boxed sets that I mentioned last week. I finally gave up on two of the sets because the writing was absolutely atrocious and I could no longer stomach the idiocy of the characters, and the fact that the stories made no sense - plus the crimes were solved as if by magic. Not actual magic, which would truly have helped the plot because the books were so awful, but the kind of magic involving lucky guesses and police officers spilling the beans on literally every piece of evidence gathered so far. That helped drop my Currently Reading quite a bit. I am not actually reading 14 books currently, but I add all the books in the sets to my Currently Reading list so I can get them read and removed speedy quick. There are also some NetGalley ARCs I am reading, as well as an ARC for a publisher and a couple I am reading with Eleanor. The actual total on my 'Currently Reading' Shelf is 60, but the remaining books are for research for my own book that I am writing about Eleanor of Aquitaine.)

Is your TBR under control, or a hot mess like mine?

Happy Reading!
Sarah

    1. Why, thank you! Although I will confess, I am not actually reading fourteen at once. I have one last boxed set of cozy mysteries to finish and get deleted from my Kindle, and I always add all the books in the set to my TBR at the same time to make it easier to mark as read instead of going and finding each one separately. I am juggling about ten or so right now, some are ARCs, one is a cozy mystery, and then a couple that Eleanor and I are reading together.

    2. Ahh, OK. It's nice that your daughter and you read together. Hopefully she'll keep the habit....it didn't quite stick with my niece and nephew. :(

    3. Oh no! That is something that worries me a bit...but our home has books in pretty much every room. She has been surrounded by books since before she was even born. I started reading Where the Wild Things Are to her when I was about seven months pregnant and read it faithfully every night. The first time I read it to her after she was born, she really listened, and turned her head to look at me while I was reading it - and she looked at me the whole time. Some time I will do a post about our massive collection of books crammed into every little space we can find, lol

  2. Cozies can be hit or miss for sure, and I'm sure there's some bad ones out there. I do hate it when the mysteries are resolved in such a silly manner, and the police are like Keystone Kops haha! I did find a few I liked, but haven't read one in ages seems like!

    1. It is SO HARD to find good ones! I have posted about Mercy Watts in the past. I hated the first book in the series, only because the author clearly had not done her homework about the city of Lincoln, NE or the University in particular (my Alma Mater for both my Bachelor's and my Master's). Luckily it was part of a boxed set also and I had a couple others that slowly, then quickly, turned me around on the series.

I am reading another series now, the main character is Margot Durand, and the mysteries aspects are pretty good, and the characters are not complete morons. That's always nice :)

    1. Excellent!! We are totally rocking this and can you imagine what our lists will look like in a couple months??!! I am trying to clear out the Kindle, then start on my physical books. This strategy will probably not last...

    3. Oh goodness, I did not even think about that!! And with all the hubbub today about the plan not being approved, and Corbyn calling for the no-confidence vote...OI! Best to have enough books to get you through months of turmoil, solid plan! :)

  6. Ooh, girl.... 4,000+ book!? I'm trying to keep my list 450 and under. I once had over 1,000 and then I thought to myself. Am I ever going to truly read these books? I think since I grew out of the YA years and have read so many I was able to take so much off my list. But it looks like you are taking off a lot so that's good. How many books do you read each year?

    1. Hey Adriana, thanks for coming by! For so long I was doing really well and keeping the list under 4,000. After all, just think of the books not even published, or written, yet that I will want to read. But I can't help myself and so here I am with an unwieldy amount that I pray every day I will get to read before I die. I am being very honest with myself as well, like you were when you removed several books from your list. It's just so hard, but realistically, some of the books I want to read aren't even in publication anymore so the chances of even finding them are slim to none. A girl can dream, though...

I typically read about 250-300 books a year. I have a five year old, so I count the chapter books we read together, but not the picture books. How many do you read??
