Stacking the Shelves 10

Stacking the Shelves is a weekly feature co-hosted by Tynga's Reviews and Reading Reality. It is a chance to showcase all the goodies you've collected in the last week, whether they're bought on-line or in-store, an ARC or a final copy, borrowed from a friend or the library, physical or digital, you get the idea. If nothing else, this treat shows how much of an addiction I really have when it comes to acquiring my precious books.

BOOK FAIR!

*Wednesday and Thursday this past week I have been at school until 8 for Parent/Teacher conferences. While that part is a drag because it is two long nights away from my baby, the upside is that I get to find all kinds of goodies for her at the book fair going on in the library. I am as addicted to buying books for Eleanor as I am for myself. Shocking.

Half-Price Books

Amazon

*I really should know better with these Horizon New Word City books, because they're not always very good, but it's $.99, so...

Kindle Unlimited
23604907 31304584 29945060
*A note about these Charles River Editors books. They're not great and usually have sub-quality editing (ironic, right?) and sometimes even incorrect facts. But they are very short reads, usually less than an hour, and I use them as a way to check my interest in a topic. I also like checking out the books on subjects I know a lot about, just to see the accuracy. Plus, if you are behind on your Goodreads Challenge, these are perfect helpers. DO NOT spend the $2.99 asking price, most are less than 60 pages. Use Kindle Unlimited if you want to check them out for yourself.

What treasures did you haul this week?

Happy Reading!
Sarah

  1. I've thought about that Mexico one, but a lot of those really cheap histories on Amazon are just old as the hills histories with a new cover and a seductive price. Me, I picked up FOUR new Star Trek books for .99 cents each. Finishes up a series I haven't read since 2011.

    1. They are so hit or miss, and I finally decided for $.99, okay whatever. So are you going to reread the whole series before starting in on your four new ones, since it has been so long since you've read them? Also, how can you go so long without finishing a series??!! :)

    2. Nah -- between my reviews, the internal recaps, and the fact that one of the books is a collection of short stories that spans the timeline of the series, I think I will be good.

As for waiting...Well, I was caught up in 2011, but the next book was a while in coming out and other books nosed in! Competition is fierce among books in my house. :)

    3. I hate when that happens. I don't read much of anything in a series anyway, so when there is a long break between books, it is extra frustrating! I kind of got sucked into this cozy mystery series and the first book was awful, but then the next one was free so I tried it and now I am hooked and the series has finally found its footing...and I have no idea when the next book is coming out now. BOO!

    4. Oh, I did LOL about fierce competition between books! It brings out the Darwinian in me... [grin]

  3. Chernobyl always fascinated me. I've watched lots of documentaries about the disaster.

    1. Me too! I can't imagine just up and leaving so suddenly. I have only read a few books on it so far, but seen more documentaries.

  4. The LAst week looks good to me, I've think I've seen that one before. Seems familiar. the Chernobyl event is a fascinating one too, I'd like to know more about it. And the Yellowstone earthquake too, after some recent articles I've read about the area and it's seismology.

    1. I have a similar book called The Final Days of Jesus by Andreas Kostenberger that I highly recommend. It takes a day-by-day look at what the Gospel says, and puts all four side by side to discuss what each says and why there are differences and what those differences may mean. I read it every year starting on Palm Sunday and just read the chapter for that corresponding day. I highly, highly recommend it. Hopefully I will be able to say the same thing about the one from my haul this week.

Chernobyl is so crazy interesting, isn't it? I want to go there, but I also don't want to die of radiation poisoning, so I guess books and documentaries it is, eh?

I don't know much about Yellowstone, so I thought this was a good place to start.

    2. Thanks for that recommendation, I will absolutely check that out. Sounds like exactly something I'd like to read. And when people ask about the difference between the Gospels it would be nice to be more educated about that too!

    3. Yes, it is a really great resource. He addresses the differences and what they possibly mean. There are also maps and such, and it is one of my favorite Christian texts. Let me know when you get to reading it, I'd love to hear your thoughts!

The author also has one called The First Days of Jesus, which covers Christ's birth and the period surrounding it.

  5. I saw the name Matt Shepard and remembered a poetry book I listened to nearly four years ago now. October Mourning by Leslea Newman is the author's attempt to come to terms with Shepard's violent and senseless death. (My thoughts on the poems are the second of this review trio)

    1. I am very hesitant about reading the book, because I am not sure I can bear it. I remember when he was murdered and being so horrified. I was 15 at the time and in my own small corner of the world, could never have fathomed someone being murdered at least in part because of their sexual orientation. I was not raised to believe there was anything wrong with being gay, and so it really was a shock to my naive 15 year old brain that it could happen. I'll be sure to check out your review, thank you!

  6. My expected book from Amazon hasn't arrived yet so only two this week - both novels picked up from my local supermarket:

A Games of Ghosts by John Connolly
    Dunstan by Conn Iggulden

    1. Not bad at all. I did also get another seven books this week from Amazon - for Eleanor. They are part of the same series as the Where is Alcatraz and Who are Serena and Venus Williams. I figured there were already enough kids' books up to show just how out of control by book-buying can be for my girl also, haha.

    2. "I Don't Want to be a Frog" really caught my eye! Kids books these days are fantastic. Back in my day (lol) we had nothing like that....

    3. It's a funny story, Eleanor liked it. This frog does not want to be a frog because of all these different reasons, only to discover every animal he wants to be is an animal that the wolf likes to eat - and the exact reasons the wolf won't eat the frog is all the same reasons the frog gives for not wanting to be a frog.

  7. This is a great haul! So many books! I Don't Want to Be a Frog and The Library Book look so cool - would love to read them! I never used Kindle Unlimited - is it like a subscription for Kindle?

    Have a nice week!

    1. Thank you, I was pretty pleased with it myself - especially the Half Price Books group. It was an impromptu trip I made to turn in a donation application for my classroom library. OF COURSE my daughter and I ended up wandering around.

We love the frog one especially, but they are all cute stories - kid lit is so much fun.

Kindle Unlimited is a subscription and I love it. I think it is $9.99 a month and you can "check out" up to ten books at a time. I tested out the trial membership for Prime and for KU at the same time, and KU ended up being the better option for me, as I found way more books I was interested in that way vs Prime.
