I am featuring books in the order that they were added to my Goodreads To-Read shelf, so sometimes there will be a couple weeks in a row of books on the same topic.
Neglected Book of the Week
Why did I add Edward the Black Prince: Power in Medieval Europe to my TBR?
Because this is another game of "How different might England have looked if so-and-so had not died first/young/without children, etc?" and I am always here for that. Even though it obviously won't make a difference, the possibilities are endless.
Have you read this book, or is it somewhere on your TBR? If you've read it, would you recommend it to others?
Happy Reading!
Sarah
I love that cover! Thanks for sharing, and I hope you enjoy it.
ReplyDeleteThank you! I love medieval art work so whenever I find a cover that includes some, it is a win-win!
Deletea what if story...don't we all have one of those? :-)
ReplyDeletesherry @ fundinmental
We do, indeed!
DeleteIt does get me to speculating when there is a moment in history when the die could have been cast so we got a different outcome. I can see why this sort of story intrigues you.
ReplyDeleteI am endlessly asking what-if when it comes to both the Plantagenets and the Tudors. Even going all the way back to 1066, had William the Bastard not defeated Harold at Hastings, what would Europe look like today?
DeleteI love the idea of speculative historical fiction, but the delivery on these is really hit or miss. I'll be eager to hear your thoughts on this one!
ReplyDeleteI feel bad, I was kind of misleading with my statement about the book :-| I love this period and love to speculate on just how differently the UK and Europe might look today had certain events gone one way or another. BUT, it is very true that it is such a hit or miss category. The Tudor one I recently read was quite a disappointment.
DeleteWe did a big family trip to London last year, so I've been kind of obsessed with all of that history!
DeleteI wondered, with your picture having Stonehenge in the background! I took my mom to Scotland back in 2009. It was her dream vacation and we spent a few days roaming the whole length and width of the country. We then hopped over to London for a showing of Wicked on her birthday, and then a day trip to Stonehenge, Windsor, and Bath the next day. I can't wait to show Eleanor the UK when she is a little older. I am obsessed. I love it, right up until about the time QEI takes over, though I can usually stomach her reign. I lose interest in the 1600s though because the world is then becoming more modern.
DeleteAnd another historical figure that I know next to nothing about. When I was in school we studied American history and didn't really look at anything else. I do hope you enjoy this one, Sarah!
ReplyDeleteThank you Carole! I used to really love early US history, and my love for the UK came much later, when I was an adult. Definitely after the trip I took my mom on for her dream vacation to Scotland. I fell in love with the country and the history there and have been hooked ever since!
DeleteI know so little about Edward of Woodstock. I like the direction your mind went when you decided to add this to your TBR, wondering what would have happened if . . . :-) I hope you enjoy this when you read it!
ReplyDeleteIt is such a fun game to play. Richard II was such a dud of a king, things could have been so different in that era. But who knows, maybe things would have been worse?
DeleteI am currently reading a neglected book from the backlog, a book for a reading group that never happened because of the virus: Akin by Emma Donoghue. She is such a great writer and I am loving it.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad that after 7 weeks, we are still finding joy in things we love so much!
