Top Ten Tuesday | Books on My Summer 2020 TBR

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl.

The books on this list are not necessarily being published this summer. I don't read a lot of fiction, so it is not like authors I am interested in are pumping out 2-4 books a year, what with the research that typically goes into the subjects they write about. Instead, this is a list of the books I am most looking forward to reading next.

If this topic if of interest to you as well - and I sure as hell hope it is. Our country is failing our Black brothers and sisters, and has been for 400 years - then you may find this reading list helpful as well. I created this list a few days ago and would love any additional recommendations to add to it.

Walking With the Wind The Color of Compromise The Warmth of Other Suns The Color of Law
Me and White Supremacy Stamped From the Beginning The New Jim Crow How to Be An Antiracist

Are any of these on your radar, too? Let me know!

Happy Reading!
Sarah

  1. I've seen Me and White Supremacy around a lot. Need to look at that one and some of these others.

    1. Yes! And check out the previous list if you have not seen it yet, I linked to it above. If you have any books to add to it, I would be glad to add them to the list! I will also be looking for fiction soon as well.

  2. I would say I hope you like these... but I'm not sure if that's the correct sentiment. They seem more informative than anything else, so I guess it's better to hope you find them informative.

I'm not exactly sure how narrow of a range of books you're looking for, but Hidden Figures sounds interesting to me, although I haven't read it yet. I read The Autobiography of Malcolm X a long time ago and I thought that was interesting.

    1. I agree that the sentiment is not there to 'like' these books, because there is nothing to like about systemic racism but I definitely understand what you mean. Informative and educational is what I am going for!

I completely forgot about Hidden Figures, it is on my TBR. I will be adding the Malcom X book as well, thank you for the suggestion!

    2. I too found the Malcolm X book interesting as well as two books penned by Black Panther members. 'Hidden Figures' is in a pile of Math books that I keep meaning to get around to... LOVED the movie. I've added 'The Color of Law' and a few others to my Wish List.

    3. If you can recall the titles of the Black Panther books, would you let me know? I want to add as many books to the list as possible. I am still trying to figure out how best to organize the info because right now it is just one long page and it doesn't look very organized.

  3. The New Jim Crow was such a good and important read. I'll be keeping an eye on this post to see what others folks recommend. You mentioned most of the books I would have suggested. :)

    1. That would be awesome, I want this list to be as comprehensive as possible. I created a new page that I am adding to as often as I get new suggestions. I only have adult non-fiction right now, but would love to include picture books, middle grade, and YA fiction and non-fiction as well.

  4. Hi there. This is quite a thorough collection and informative. I am from South Africa, so my sentiments are not as intense. But I do love the unity that is obviously built at this stage.

Oh and I love your blog name!! Very clever. I'm new on the Blogosphere and would appreciate a visit!

    Have a good week.

    1. Thanks for coming by, and welcome! I agree that there is a strong sense of unity that is building up. These protests in the last three weeks feel a lot different than ones that happened before in other cases. I think part of that has to do with the fact that it happened when we have all been at home, so people who might otherwise look away have no choice but to see what is happening and begin to change their way of thinking. I am cautiously optimistic in the fact that so many books that I am recommending, my friends are saying that they can't get because they are all sold out and on order. I obviously want them to get the books, but seeing that so many others are doing the same is wonderful.

The blog name came about when I was setting up the blog and every cute or funny or witty name I tried was already in use. I literally banged my fist on my desk and said, "UGH! All the book blog names are taken!" and thus, my baby was born!

    1. I am not on Instagram, shoot! I don't have the book yet either, I am queued up in the hold line from the library. I would love to be part of the buddy read though, I might have to start one of my own, and take a look at the Instagram one. Thanks for letting me know!

  7. I think a lot of these books are books many of us want to read this summer. We all need some enlightening.

    1. It is making me cautiously optimistic as well that when my friends go to check out or buy the books, they are sold out or already checked out. I want my friends to read them of course, but it is wonderful that so many are doing the same.

    1. Excellent, thank you so much for the recommendation! I am always looking for suggestions, and right now my list is entirely adult non-fiction because that it was I typically read. I want to include picture books, middle grade, and YA fiction and non-fiction also, and graphic novels are definitely a medium that needs to be included as well. Thank you!

    1. I am really looking forward to that one. It is not enough for people to say they are not racist, as there is no neutral here, and there never has been. Silence is complicity. Thanks for coming by!
