Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl.
The books on this list are not necessarily being published this summer. I don't read a lot of fiction, so it is not like authors I am interested in are pumping out 2-4 books a year, what with the research that typically goes into the subjects they write about. Instead, this is a list of the books I am most looking forward to reading next.
If this topic if of interest to you as well - and I sure as hell hope it is. Our country is failing our Black brothers and sisters, and has been for 400 years - then you may find this reading list helpful as well. I created this list a few days ago and would love any additional recommendations to add to it.
Are any of these on your radar, too? Let me know!
Happy Reading!
Sarah
I've seen Me and White Supremacy around a lot. Need to look at that one and some of these others.
ReplyDeleteYes! And check out the previous list if you have not seen it yet, I linked to it above. If you have any books to add to it, I would be glad to add them to the list! I will also be looking for fiction soon as well.
DeleteI would say I hope you like these... but I'm not sure if that's the correct sentiment. They seem more informative than anything else, so I guess it's better to hope you find them informative.
ReplyDeleteI'm not exactly sure how narrow of a range of books you're looking for, but Hidden Figures sounds interesting to me, although I haven't read it yet. I read The Autobiography of Malcolm X a long time ago and I thought that was interesting.
I agree that the sentiment is not there to 'like' these books, because there is nothing to like about systemic racism but I definitely understand what you mean. Informative and educational is what I am going for!
DeleteI completely forgot about Hidden Figures, it is on my TBR. I will be adding the Malcom X book as well, thank you for the suggestion!
I too found the Malcolm X book interesting as well as two books penned by Black Panther members. 'Hidden Figures' is in a pile of Math books that I keep meaning to get around to... LOVED the movie. I've added 'The Color of Law' and a few others to my Wish List.
DeleteIf you can recall the titles of the Black Panther books, would you let me know? I want to add as many books to the list as possible. I am still trying to figure out how best to organize the info because right now it is just one long page and it doesn't look very organized.
DeleteRevolutionary Suicide by Huey P Newton
DeleteSeize the Time – The Story of The Black Panther Party and Huey P Newton by Bobby Searle
Thank you!
DeleteThe New Jim Crow was such a good and important read. I'll be keeping an eye on this post to see what others folks recommend. You mentioned most of the books I would have suggested. :)
ReplyDeleteMy TTT .
That would be awesome, I want this list to be as comprehensive as possible. I created a new page that I am adding to as often as I get new suggestions. I only have adult non-fiction right now, but would love to include picture books, middle grade, and YA fiction and non-fiction as well.
DeleteHi there. This is quite a thorough collection and informative. I am from South Africa, so my sentiments are not as intense. But I do love the unity that is obviously built at this stage.
ReplyDeleteOh and I love your blog name!! Very clever. I'm new on the Blogosphere and would appreciate a visit!
Have a good week.
Thanks for coming by, and welcome! I agree that there is a strong sense of unity that is building up. These protests in the last three weeks feel a lot different than ones that happened before in other cases. I think part of that has to do with the fact that it happened when we have all been at home, so people who might otherwise look away have no choice but to see what is happening and begin to change their way of thinking. I am cautiously optimistic in the fact that so many books that I am recommending, my friends are saying that they can't get because they are all sold out and on order. I obviously want them to get the books, but seeing that so many others are doing the same is wonderful.
DeleteThe blog name came about when I was setting up the blog and every cute or funny or witty name I tried was already in use. I literally banged my fist on my desk and said, "UGH! All the book blog names are taken!" and thus, my baby was born!
Oh yes, sorry - here's my link https://elzareads.blogspot.com/
ReplyDeleteThanks for the link, will be over soon!
DeleteLove this! Are you on Instagram? There is a buddy read of Stamped From the Beginning that starts on June 19th!
ReplyDeleteI am not on Instagram, shoot! I don't have the book yet either, I am queued up in the hold line from the library. I would love to be part of the buddy read though, I might have to start one of my own, and take a look at the Instagram one. Thanks for letting me know!
DeleteI think a lot of these books are books many of us want to read this summer. We all need some enlightening.
ReplyDeleteMost definitely! I always recommend reading White Fragility by Robin DiAngelo as well. If you have any suggestions, let me know!
Deletethanks for sharing
ReplyDeletesherry @ fundinmental
No problem, thanks for stopping by!
Deletegood stuff; it's heartening to see scholarship tackling modern problems...
ReplyDeleteIt is making me cautiously optimistic as well that when my friends go to check out or buy the books, they are sold out or already checked out. I want my friends to read them of course, but it is wonderful that so many are doing the same.
DeleteOooh! The Color of Compromise sounds like an interesting read! Great list!
ReplyDeleteHere’s my TTT!
Ronyell @ Rabbit Ears Book Blog
Thank you! That is one I am most looking forward too, though I think all of these will be fantastic reads.
DeleteI've seen a lot of anti-racist reading lists today, which is super helpful. It's nice to have the books gathered into one place. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteHappy TTT!
That's great, I will have to take a look as well, I am always looking for suggestions to add to my list that I created. I am especially looking for picture books, middle grade, and YA as well to give a wider variety of options.
DeleteThe Warmth of Other Suns is so amazing!
ReplyDeleteI am looking forward to reading it!
DeleteOff to check these out.
ReplyDeletewww.rsrue.blogspot.com
Wonderful! I hope you find them informative and helpful!
DeleteI'd also recommend March, an autobiographical graphic novel trilogy about the Civil Rights Movement, from the perspective of U.S. Congressman John Lewis, a civil rights leader.
ReplyDeleteHere's my TTT list.
Excellent, thank you so much for the recommendation! I am always looking for suggestions, and right now my list is entirely adult non-fiction because that it was I typically read. I want to include picture books, middle grade, and YA fiction and non-fiction also, and graphic novels are definitely a medium that needs to be included as well. Thank you!
DeleteGreat choices! I'm waiting on my hold to come in for How to be an Anti-Racist.
ReplyDeleteCheck out my TTT and my review of Sword and Pen by Rachel Caine
I am really looking forward to that one. It is not enough for people to say they are not racist, as there is no neutral here, and there never has been. Silence is complicity. Thanks for coming by!
DeleteThanks Sarah, this list is useful. :)
ReplyDeleteI am glad you think so, thank you! I have new books to add to it, and I hope it is helpful for many people.
